Even if you don’t know the name David Hayter, I’m almost certain that you know his work. He’s the screenwriter of X-Men 1 & 2, The Scorpion King and Watchmen, he starred in the cult-classic manga live-action adaptation Guvyer: Dark Hero, he was the voice of Captain America in the classic mid-90’s Spider-Man cartoon, and with the exception of the very latest entry in the franchise, he was the voice of the heroic Solid Snake in all the Metal Gear Solid video games. And now, with Wolves, he can finally also add “director” to his resume.

Thanks to the likes of Twilight, werewolves are popular again, and Hayter wants to tap into that with Wolvesonly there are no dumb as a bag of hammers, walking six-packs in ripped denim shorts here. Nor any CGI really. Hayter is trying to make this the type of old-school R-rated werewolf flick with lots of spurting blood and detailed practical makeup effects.

And based on this first red-band trailer he has definitely achieved those two goals, I’m just not too sure about the rest of the movie. It could be the annoyingly overbearing music or some of the slightly wooden acting on display, but there’s a bit of a B-Grade feeling cropping up in places here. That being said, irrespective of the movie itself, I will probably watch the movie for Jason Momoa alone, who looks like an absolute badass here. I have a feeling that despite his obvious villain status I’m going to be cheering for him instead of our hero, Lucas Till, when they finally go clawed to to toe.

Hayter once described Wolves as “Twilight with a bit more bite to it, and without abstinence,” and if that sounds like your kind of thing, then check out the trailer below courtesy of IGN.

Popular high school student Cayden Richards (Lucas Till) wakes from a horrific nightmare, only to realize that he’s living it… He is changing into something vicious, unpredictable and wild. Forced to hit the road after the brutal murder of his parents, Cayden tries to hunt down the truth of what he is. In the remote, mountain town of Lupine Ridge, he discovers others like him – Including the beautiful Angelina (Merrit Patterson), a young woman caught between two ancient clans of “wolves.” And when he finally discovers the shocking truth behind his ancestry, Cayden realizes there is only one way to save the woman he loves… a grisly fight to the death against forces more savage than he could have ever imagined.

Wolves also stars Stephen McHattie, Merritt Patterson and Benedict Carver. It will be released on VOD on October 16, 2014, before getting a limited theatrical release on November 14, 2014.
