We have seen Tom Hanks star in movies based in pretty much every part of the world, but I do believe that Saudi Arabia will be a first for him as that’s exactly where A Hologram for the King is taking him (for the record the movie was filmed largely in Morocco, but very films are film on location these days). This new comedic drama from Lionsgate, Roadside Attractions and Saban Films places Hanks’ character in a strange country and culture where he is bound to feel out of place and make culturally insensitive pranks trying to fit in…

Sounds a lot like me at your average social gathering where braving ‘others’ is always going to lead to incredible amounts of awkwardness. Anyway – enough about my social issues and over to the trailer…

The film is directed by Tom Tykwer (Cloud Atlas, Perfume), who also adapted the script from the novel by Dave Eggers and tells the story of a troubled American businessman Alan Clay (Hanks) who goes off to an up-and-coming Saudi Arabian city in a last-ditch effort to stave off bankruptcy, pay his daughter’s college fees, and finally accomplish something big in his career. Its nothing groundbreaking, but Hanks is normally quite solid in these type of rolesand hopefully the different setting makes for some good comedy.

A Hologram for the King also stars Alexander Black, Sarita Choudhury, Tom Skerritt and Ben Whishaw and is being released in US theatres on April 22 of this year. South Africa is only getting the film on June 3rd, so whether its any good or complete rubbish, we should hopefully know well in advance.
