Do you like young adult dystopian movies? Do you like Youtube? Would you like to see them combined? Well then you’re in luck with the upcoming “thriller” The Thinning from Youtube’s new subscription service slash original content farm – Youtube Red. It stars photogenic Youtubers Logan Paul and Peyton List as high schoolers in a world where your survival is determined by how well you perform in a standardised test.

Everyone else, imagine every single young adult dystopian story trope and a bushel of Youtube-famous persons crammed into a movie that aims to be as good as The Hunger Games, would settle for being as good as Divergent, and – judging by the trailer – doesn’t come close.

The official plot synopsis is as follows:

The Thinning takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where population control is dictated by a high-school aptitude test. When two students (Logan Paul and Peyton List) discover the test is smoke and mirrors hiding a larger conspiracy, they must fight the system to expose it and take it down.

No. This looks really bad, not even remotely entertaining-bad, and that’s all I’m going to say about it. But I always look for something positive to say about a trailer because as we all know tastes vary considerably, and in this case… I guess it could be used for a bad movie drinking game? Provided you’re immune to alcohol poisoning or have a bionic liver.

What do you think?

The Thinning is due for release on Youtube Red on 12 October. Directed by Michael J. Gallagher (Totally Sketch), who co-wrote alongside Steve Greene (Internet Famous), it stars Logan Paul, Peyton List, Lia Marie Johnson, Calum Worthy and Matthew Glave.
