I was not a fan of Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t hate it; but that would probably have been a more favourable response because then I would have felt something instead of the overwhelming meh-ness I actually left the cinema with. Clearly though, my opinion about movies is about as important as Alwynne’s opinions on salads as the movie went to become the 19th highest grossing film of all time, pulling in just over $1 billion. And we all know what that means, right? Sequel! Specifically a sequel titled Alice Through The Looking (the lack of punctuation is making my eye twitch).

While the main cast of Mia Wasikowska as Alice, Johnny Depp as Madonna The Mad Hatter, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen and Helena Bonham-Carter as the Red Queen are all returning, Tim Burton shimmies out of the director’s chair – though still retains his producer’s hat – to make way for James Bobin, the co-creator of Flight of the Conchords and director of The Muppets movie. In case you’re new to this site, those are both things I love dearly, which means that I’m now kind of intrigued to see what can be done with this next chapter.

And we get our first proper look at that chapter – including Time, a villainous new character played by Sacha Baron Cohen, who allows Alice to visit the other characters at different points in their lives – in the first trailer for the film which just got released last night! Check it out below!

That actually looks like it has some potential. Production design was never a problem on the first film, and it looks just as good, if not better here. It’s the addition of Sacha Baron Cohen that has me more optimistic this time around. That and one aspect of the story which isn’t shown here in the trailer, but which was shown to us extensively at Disney’s Showcase earlier in the year: What actually kicks off Alice’s time-travelling adventure is that she returns to Wonderland to find that the Hatter has gone completely sane, and she needs to find how and why and restore him to his normal mad self. This allows the movie to be both prequel and sequel, which is rather clever.

Alice Through the Looking Glass also stars Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall, Stephen Fry, Rhys Ifans, Toby Jones, Michael Sheen, Paul Whitehouse, Ed Speleers and Matt Lucas. It is scheduled for release on May 27, 2016
