Universal wants more MAMA

Mama may not have been the most amazing ghost story out this year, but it sure was a helluva lot better than the usual fare of torture porn and found footage flicks that have been haunting cinemas for years. A creepy short film originally, director Andres Muschietti got the chance to big screen it up with some help from Guillermo “ALL THE MOVIES” Del Toro.

And with a dark tone that was refreshing, Mama did pretty well out there in the box office wilderness. So like all successful horror film franchises, it’s going to be getting the sequel treatment.

Starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Jessica Chastain as Lucas and Annabel, a couple who adopt a pair of feral nieces and their creepy, unwelcome entity known only as Mama, the film has managed to pull in almost $90 million at the box office so far.

Universal Pictures president of international David Kosse likes those numbers, especially because the film has only been released in limited markets so far. Thanks to the co-production that the film used to get made, Kosse is thinking that those methods can be used for other genre films, as well as a sequel. “We think there’s potential for a Mama franchise,” Kosse told Screen Daily. “We’d like to do another one. But those conversations are in the early stages.”

Are you my mummy? Don’t expect that question to go unanswered then. Just not very soon.
