If the title of this article wasn’t obvious enough, there is a possible MAJOR SPOILER for The Avengers below. If you don’t want to know what that SPOILER is, then I suggest you go do something else. Anything else.

How about you go play Helicopter, the greatest flash game ever made? That should keep you busy for… oh, say 12 or 15 years.

Now where were we…

The IMDB page of veteran English actress Jenny Agutter (Logan’s Run, The Eagle has Landed, Equus) was recently updated to indicate that she will be appearing in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers. Now for some fans of classic cinema (“Ooh, ooh pick me! Pick me!”), this would have been news enough, but as Harry at AICN discovered, she may have let slip about a major cameo appearance in the upcoming superhero movie during an interview with RadioTimes.com.

Here’s the pertinent extract from the interview:

As for Agutter, she’s about to metamorphose again to appear alongside Samuel L Jackson and Scarlett Johansson in upcoming Hollywood blockbuster The Avengers.

“I’m sworn to secrecy! I wasn’t allowed a script until I got there, and when I did, I felt like a complete child being on big sets and a huge parking lot full of Winnebagos.”

She does let slip that two of these housed Spider-Man and Iron Man; we suspect Agutter won’t be able to avoid sci-fi conventions for much longer.

Spider-Man? Did he just say Spider-Man??

Now for those of you that don’t know, Marvel actually does not own the film rights to certain of their franchises, Spider-Man being one of them. Thus far, this shared film universe that they have built has been populated only by those characters whose rights they actually own. But has Marvel somehow struck a deal with Sony Pictures, the holder of Spidey’s current film rights, or did Mrs Agutter merely get it wrong? In the comics, despite not being on the classic Avengers roster, Spider-Man has actually attained membership on two different iterations of the team in recent years, so him making an appearance in the film is definitely in the realm of possibility.

If he does show up, I’m assuming that it will be Andrew Garfield under the mask, and his appearance in The Avengers would certainly go a long way to validate his upcoming rebooted Spider-Man film.
