It’s finally official! After it was reported a short while back, Legendary and Warner Bros. have now released dates for their new trilogy that will see actually Godzilla and King Kong coming together. With 2014’s Godzilla enjoying warm reviews from critics and movie goers and garnering big profits at the box office – not to mention how everybody wants in on that shared movie universe business – it prompted Legendary to get the follow-up movies underway.

Here is a statement released by the studios:

All-powerful monsters become towering heroes for a new generation, revealing a mythology that brings together Godzilla and Legendary’s King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new. Monarch, the human organization that uncovered Godzilla in the 2014 film, will expand their mission across multiple releases

The first to kick off this trilogy is Kong: Skull Island on March 10, 2017, followed by Godzilla 2 on June 8, 2018 and then Godzilla vs. Kong, set for release in theaters in 2020.

That certainly looks like a monstrous line up, sure to delight many as fans have wanted to see a new Godzilla vs King Kong movie for years now. This is something that would probably have happened ages ago had it not been for rights issues with studios – thankfully Legendary and Warner Bros. have decided to join forces and bring these titans together for our viewing pleasure.

Thomas Tull, CEO of Legendary pictures released the following statement regarding the trilogy.

Audiences really responded to Godzilla,

Today, I’m excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I’ve always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we’re pleased to be announcing that and more.

This wont be the first time that Kong and Godzilla will be in on the big screens however, having previously clashed in the 1967 King Kong vs Godzilla.

There have been concerns about the size differences between the two with some saying that Kong would need to be the size of the Empire State Building rather than hanging off of it. I’m sure however that the studios will have a plan to tackle those concerns when we next see the giant ape in Kong: Skull Island.
