All the winners at the Screen Actors Guild Awards 2017

It’s awards season in Hollywood, which means there’s not a weekend that goes by when some group in Tinsel Town isn’t going home with something new to add to the mantlepiece. And last night was the turn of the Screen Actors Guild to dish out their statues (which have always reminded me of male versions of Doctor Who’s weeping angels, but I digress) at the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards!

The SAG Awards may not be as popular publicly as the Golden Globes or have the prestige of the Oscars, but they’re definitely an important event on the awards calendar. Out of all the high profile awards ceremonies, it is the only one where winners are voted on exclusively by their peers in SAG-AFTRA, an organization that represents over 160, 000 people in the entertainment industry. In other words, this ceremony is not ruled by a stuffy old committee, but rather says what actors think of each other’s work over the last year. And this is what they thought of the bounty of film and television titles in 2016.

Out of the winners, two major storylines appeared. With Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Mahershala Ali, and the cast of Hidden Figures all notching up wins, it was clear that films with predominantly black casts were not being left out in the cold as we’ve controversially seen happen recently with the Oscars. Whether this is a reaction to all the racial tension currently gripping America or not, is up for debate, but nobody can deny that the winners didn’t all deserve it with their incredible work.

The second interesting story is the success of Netflix, as the streaming platform’s original content brought in ten nominations and three wins thanks to The Crown and Stranger Things.
