Wonder Woman movie toy reveals a first look at the war god Ares

Wonder Woman may be iconic, but her rogues gallery? They usually run the gamut of barely known, such as Doctor Psycho, through to the truly bizarre, like the gigantic Asian racist stereotype Egg Fu. No seriously, an egg-themed super-brain villain who spoke like the worst possible caricature of all time. But there is one villain that has gone on to define Wonder Woman over the years, a heavyweight force of nature that stands as her polar opposite.

An actual Olympian God of war, the mythical Ares.

In the DC Comics source material, Ares is an immortal deity who feeds off of conflict and death. War fuels Ares, and his sole purpose in life is to spread as much conflict as possible. Which ties in perfectly to Wonder Woman’s entry into the trenches of World War I, a global battle that still stands as one of the bloodiest eras in human history.

DC and Warner Bros. have kept any mention of Ares under wraps so far however, possibly after having learnt a lesson or two from that pre-mature reveal of Doomsday in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Fortunately, some new toys have shed some light on the titanic threat that Diana will face. Check it, courtesy of ToyArk:

Ares’ design looks largely reminiscent of the enduring style he has sported since comic book artist George Perez redesigned him for the 1987 reboot of Wonder Woman: Greek armour, a fear-inspiring helmet and a scale that makes him tower over the rest of the cast. It’s rumoured that David “Harry Potter” Thewlis will voice the character, with an entire warehouse of digital effects rendering him for the big screen. Probably. Maybe they just slapped the old Super-Shredder armour back onto Kevin Nash and splashed him with blue paint, according to sources whose record so far is spotty at best. Or maybe they actually even got Ahnuhld involved somehow. Who knows?

Wonder Woman is out this June, and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Lucy Davis, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner and Saïd Taghmaoui.
