Wonder Woman plot and villain details possibly revealed

For a character whose one whole gimmick is about revealing the truth, we actually haven’t had that much divulged yet for the upcoming Wonder Woman feature film. Warner Bros\DC Comics has already given us two trailers, but they’ve been edited in such a way to still keep a lot of the plot details under wraps. Yes, we know Gal Gadot is going to kick much ass in WWI as the Amazonian superhero and that Chris Pine will be playing her love interest/partner Steve Trevor who kicks off the story after he crash lands on the all-female Amazonian island of Themiscyra. But exactly who are they teaming up against?

Well, the last trailer gave us a clue that classic Wonder Woman comic book villain Doctor Poison and her penchant for toxins may play a role, but then were those rumblings that Danny Huston’s WWI military commander may be more than he’s letting on. Well a new rumour seems to shed some light on this, and possibly even confirms character details. I say “possibly” because this news comes to us via French movie site Les Toiles Héroïques, who themselves transcribed and translated an interview held with Pine on Studio Ciné Live. So yeah, a bit like a game of broken telephone here, so consume this news with the required amount of sodium chloride.

According to this report though, it’s now been confirmed that Huston’s character is in fact Ares, the Greek god of War, and that he wants something deadly in the possession of Pine’s Trevor.

Pine: “I play a pilot who works for the Allies and spies on the Germans without their knowledge. My character steals a notebook filled with scientific formulas in an Ottoman base, he steals a plane but is shot down in the open sea.”

Behind these scientific formulas, there is a deadly gas that could well annihilate humanity. It turns out that it might interest Ares, the god of war. He is jealous of humanity, which is a creation of his father, the deceased Zeus (the Amazons and Zeus rebelled against Ares and Zeus died from the hand of his son)…

In the comics (specifically since the DC Comics New 52 reboot from a few years back), Wonder Woman aka Diana has quite the relationship with Ares. Initially it’s revealed that Diana is actually the demigod offspring of Zeus and Amazonian Queen Hippolyta, but she embraces full godhood when she kills Ares and becomes the new god of war. The (brokenly translated) report goes on to hint that some elements of this will be changed in the movie, with Ares now being tied to the mythology of all the Amazons and not just Diana.

Why did Zeus create the Amazons? Because shaping man in his image made his son Ares, incidentally a god of war, mad with jealousy, he convinces the guys to confront each other. To restore harmony between them, Zeus created the Amazons that Ares reduced to slavery. The Amazons revolt with the help of Zeus, who will die of the hand of his son having had time to find Themyscira, their haven of peace where they will grow Diana. (…) Diana Prince becomes Wonder Woman by helping Steve Trevor and a squad of proud arm-in-law in search of one who wants to wipe humanity off the map with deadly gas.

Wonder Woman’s mythology in the comics has changed so many times that it’s hard to point at one version as the definitive one. I have always been a huge fan of the demigod/god of war angle though, so I think it could be really cool if the movie ended with Diana killing Ares and then actually becoming the god of war in the movie universe as well. That adds an even more interesting dynamic to her character to play off the rest of the heroes in the Justice League in modern times.

Wonder Woman is scheduled to release on June 7, 2017.

I read that paragraph in my head with a thick chinese accent. I may go to hell for it, but I’ll go laughing.
