Any kid who grew up playing old classic 8-bit arcade games will tell you that Wreck-It Ralph was a pretty awesome movie. And if they don’t tell you that, they’re lying. Wreck-It Ralph was a movie that really brought the world of classic arcade gaming to life with a fantastic story about the video game bad guy Ralph (voiced by John C Reilly) who deep down really wanted to be seen as a good guy by the rest of his coded buddies. However, wrecking things is coded into his digital make-up, so his quest to be liked is certainly not an easy one. It is not only one of the big highlights from Disney’s animation studios of late, but certainly hit the nostalgia spot perfectly and appealed to both adults and kids as a result.

And we’ve heard rumours before that a sequel is on its way, but now we can report that it has been officially confirmed and has a release date – of March 9 2018 – still way too far away. However this is exciting news and comes as no surprise after the success of the first film. The news came via a Facebook Live Broadcast from director Rich Moore with the shows original writer Phil Johnston (who also scripted the brilliant Zootropolis from earlier this year) and the star, John C. Reilly making an appearance.

They are obviously being very tight lipped on what the sequel will be about, but we can gather quite a lot of information from some leaked concept art showing Ralph and Vanellope about to wreak havoc in the internet. Johnston had this to say about the leaked concept art:

The world of the internet is the perfect place to send Ralph and Vanellope. The scope and scale are so vast and the possibilities for comedy are endless.

Rich Moore gave a few extra details to Disney.com:

The relationship between Vanellope and Ralph, we’re going to see that again, and the comedy that comes with the two of them. We’re going to see their friendship tested by getting to the Internet. So everything you loved about the first one and a whole lot more.

This story arc though makes perfect sense given the huge impact the internet has on the gaming world and to see the transition of the characters and how they adapt to the internet is a clever way to move the story forward and also make it fresh and more relatable to a younger audience. I would certainly love to see what trouble Ralph can get up to given the vastness of the internet and the bigger things to destroy. I’m hoping though that they still keep some of the retro-vibe going, to feed those nostalgia levels further in the sequel.

And it seems that Moore agrees with me, sharing the following with Collider:

That is a time period of video games that’s really near and dear to my heart, like growing up during that era of arcade games. So we want to represent that, because that’s a big part of our world with the first one, I don’t want to – with the sequel, I’m finding out we don’t want to just do more of the same, but also we don’t want to do something so different that it doesn’t even feel like it’s from the first movie or doesn’t relate to the first one. So we’re really trying to find that balance of how can we have those great kind of references to retro arcade culture but also have it feel that this is also a contemporary world with newer games, newer – everything you can find on the Internet.

They would go on to confirm that Sarah Silverman will also be returning to voice the character of Vanellope von Schweetz. There is no other word on other cast members returning for the sequel, but I would expect quite a few to be returning based on these comments along with a host of new characters representing the more modern side of internet gaming.

This new release date does present some bad news in that another Disney film has been pushed back to a later date with Disney Animation’s Gigantic originally being scheduled for March 9th 2018 and now releasing November 21st 2018.

What gaming characters would you like to see make an appearance in the Wreck-It-Ralph sequel?
