It’s nearly time for the holidays, which are a time of cheer and wonder. It would make sense then, for the free (feel free to insert your own inverted commas) that come with Xbox Games With Gold in December to inject a little of that Yuletide cheer. They’re not though – instead we have a dark co-op FPS, a middling adventure game and an entirely okay 3rd person hack and slash game.

If there’s one game on the list of games coming that’s pure, distilled joy, then it’s Child of Eden, Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s spiritual successor to Rez is one of the best games from the 360 era with Kinect support, though it can be played with a regular controller just fine. Another of his games to focus on the union of senses, synaesthesia, it’s a psychedelic trip. It’ll be coming to Xbox 360 and Xbox One with Backwards compatibility from December 1 to December 15 – presumably with its Kinect support yanked on the Xbox One. Joining it on Xbox One will be Warhammer End Times – Vermintide, it’s a co-op FPS that’ll have you shooting hordes of Skaven. It’s also been enhanced for the Xbox One X with native 4K support.

The other Xbox One game is Telltale’s Back to the Future game. While it wasn’t as good as most of Telltale’s games, it’s notable for the incredibly good performance A.J. LoCasio dished out, channelling a young Michael J Fox to deliver a perfect Marty McFly.

The last Xbox 360 game is the middling B-grade hack and slash game with too many quick time events, Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death. It’s…forgettable.

To sum, here’s what’s coming to games with Gold in December:

Can’t member when last I played or even downloaded a GWG game! As it is there’s too many games and we all have huge backlogs constantly reminding us that we’re no good and that true gamers would play through all games immediately!? The stress is becoming unbearable! I for one would love it it they removed GWG completely and rather subsidise Gamepass…….but one can dream I guess…..
