First person action games are one of my favourite genres in computer/console gaming, which I have devoted way too many hours to growing up. From Doom, to Quake, to Unreal, to Half-Life, to Counter-strike, to Halo… You get the picture – I’ve played many of them and it’s an experience I will keep coming back to.
Hang on, yes this is a movie site and this article did not get posted here by accident instead of at Lazygamer.net. The reason why I’m bringing all this up is because first person action is a vital part of our gaming lives, but not something which we would typically imagine seeing in a movie. It’s a little difficult to tell a story from only a single point of view and never see the main character – and yet, that is exactly what Director Ilya Naishuller is attempting in his new movie, Hardcore Henry.
It sounds really gimmicky, but it is something the director has already experimented with in the music video industry where his results were widely praised, so if he can transport this success into a longer format and create an immersive experience – he could be on to the next big thing in cinemas, motion sickness…
Essentially, it looks pretty much what you would expect from your typical first person action game without you actually controlling the character. I’m interested to see how the action plays out in a first person perspective and if you this perspective in a movie actually takes away or draws you into a character.
The film will star the talented South African actor, Sharlto Copley, who has a knack for trying a diverse range of characters and accents in his career and will be playing a British fellow in this one. Some of his accents don’t always work out – but this one sounds a little more convincing, though you can still pick up his Afrikaans roots. He will need to be at his A Game here as he will be surrounded by a mostly inexperienced cast including Danila Kozlovsky, Haley Bennett, Andrey Dementyev, Dasha Charusha and Sveta Ustinova.
It certainly looks interesting with the official synopsis as follows:
Strap in. Hardcore Henry is one of the most unflinchingly original wild-rides to hit the big screen in a long time: You remember nothing. Mainly because you’ve just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett). She tells you that your name is Henry. Five minutes later, you are being shot at, your wife has been kidnapped, and you should probably go get her back. Who’s got her? His name’s Akan (Danila Kozlovsky); he’s a powerful warlord with an army of mercenaries, and a plan for world domination. You’re also in an unfamiliar city of Moscow, and everyone wants you dead. Everyone except for a mysterious British fellow called Jimmy (Sharlto Copley.) He may be on your side, but you aren’t sure. If you can survive the insanity, and solve the mystery, you might just discover your purpose and the truth behind your identity. Good luck, Henry. You’re likely going to need it…
Hardcore Henry will screen at SXSW and open on April 8th and is being produced STX Entertainment.
And if you are a little curious as to how they filmed it – then below picture should give you some ideas:
Do you think this is something that will work in movies or is this just a gimmick that should remain in video games?
