Zack Snyder's MAN OF STEEL will ask "What would you do if you were Superman?"

When it comes to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, the posters should really have Superman with a giant question mark on his chest instead of a stylized “S”, as at this point we still have a ton of mysteries surrounding it. The trailer released soon after Comic Con, as amazing as it looked, actually added to his confusion, as we were greeted by a very un-Snyder like bit of footage, showing off a much more dramatic Superman than we’ve ever seen.

And the only explanation we got from Snyder was that the film would be about “the big blue boy scout”. But now thanks to him talking to Total Film, we get not only a bit of a hint for the story, but also a new merchandising opportunity for some “WWYDIYWS” bracelets.

“The big challenge is if you can make people feel ‘What would you do if you were Superman?’ That’s what we went out to do as far as we could. Superman’s always been this kind of big blue boy-scout up on a throne that nobody can really touch, so we tried to make him relatable.”

“We decided to act as if no Superman film had been made – even though we love the films that have been made… Superman is a big responsibility but I felt he needed to be reintroduced to a generation and I thought this was a great opportunity.”

The most easily notable change with Snyder’s reintroduction of course, was the omission of John Williams’ iconic Superman score that has been used in just about every iteration of the character since Richard Donner’s original film. For this film though, composer extraordinaire Hans Zimmer will be creating an original theme, as Snyder explains:

“We had to say this is a Superman movie for the first time and you can’t then go ‘Oh, now let’s steal a little music’… So, yes it’s awesome music but Hans Zimmer is going to do something awesome.”

From what I could see from the Comic-Con footage, the film seems to be borrowing a bit from Mark Waid’s Superman: Birthright comic, specifically Clark Kent hitchhiking and working his way around the world as he tries to find his place in life. But apparently, Snyder claims that their script will not be drawing on any particular classic stories, but rather a mixture of what has come before.

“We have great respect for the canon. I would say it is a clashing of stories and ideas. Superman is the king-daddy of all superheroes – to make him work is a big deal.”

No what else is going to be a big deal? All the money I’m going to make from these red and blue “WWYDIYWS” bracelets!

  1. CAn’t we just have Superman being super, maybe they don’t have the budget for the special effects to pull that off, now they drown us in dramatic superhero flicks

Well, maybe dramatic is the wrong word there. By all accounts, from everybody who was lucky enough to be at Comic-Con and see the exclusive footage, it’s not that Supes was suddenly going to be going all emo and angsty, but rather that Snyder has appeared to have made a mature story that will resonate well with adults and not just try to bring in the kiddie crowd. Pretty much like what Chris Nolan did with Batman Begins.
But don’t worry about special effects though, the Comic-Con footage had plenty of crazy big budget action and there are leaked script descriptions floating around the net that hint at some major set pieces.
