Is it time for Call of Duty to go back to World War 2?

While Call of Duty has always been popular, it didn’t quite hit the mainstream and go nuclear until Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Since then, it’s really only Treyarch’s games that have stuck to the series historical roots. World at War kicked off the Black Ops story arch and was set at the tail end of World War 2. Black Ops featured the Cold War, before its sequel jumped far in to the future. This year’s Call of Duty is being developed by Treyarch – and it could return to historical wars.

The wholly unfounded, unsourced and quite possibly fake rumours suggest that the next Call of Duty will be a sequel to World at War. According to a rather hard-to-believe tweet, the next Call of Duty will be World at War 2, and is set to be revealed in May this year.

It’s the sort of thing that I’d take with a very, very large pinch of salt – though it’s given just the smallest dash of credence by a Facebook post from developer Treyarch, who on the anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbour, posted a link to the event’s Wikipedia page. While it could just be Treyarch paying respects in a way, it could also be a portent of things to come.

PearlHarbour

Taking Call of Duty back to the past would be a brave and bold step, though it could be a foolish one. I’ll always favour the historical games like Call of Duty 2 and World at War and I certainly think that it’s time for games of that ilk to make a shiny, new generation comeback, I’m a predominantly campaign-focused Call of Duty player.

There’s still so much history, so many great and tragic stories that have yet to be explored in Call of Duty, and I’d love to explore some of those conflicts.I suspect though, that I’m in the minority.

Since Modern Warfare, Call of Duty’s become almost entirely focused on the multiplayer aspect, with the campaigns being whittled down to being 5 hour experiences. Truth be told, I’m not entirely certain that multiplayer gamers want to go back to playing games with older weapons, firing off M1 carbines and Garands and Mosin–Nagants. They likely don’t want to go back to killing Nazis; many gamers likely still feel fatigue from the deluge of World War 2 shooters in the early years of the last console generation.

Most would likely miss the modern advances; things like exo-suits and double jumps, laser-guided weapons red-dot scopes – but I’d welcome a return to World War 2.

Ok, I know the hypocrite sirens are going off, but if they went back to their roots I would entirely consider purchasing a COD title again.

I’m with you buddy, but I wasn’t that big of a fan of World at War. It lacked something. A new gen World at War might be better. Throw in some procedurally generated islands where you can co-op assault the Jap positions…. Now that would be kinda, sorta, fun.

I’ve not enjoyed sniping on call of duty since world at war. scoping in with the Springfield and letting rip. Sounded like thunder once you shot that. Do you remember the ptrs that would tear off limbs! Best cod for me

World at War was by far my favourite CoD. The only one that had dismemberment from explosives and heavy ammo. Very cool, grenade kill cam started in this CoD if I remember correctly. Definitely a pre-order (don’t kill me) if this gets confirmed.

Those are some brave words young sir, I’ll still hold out on reviews first, and this is also under the assumption that we will be getting any kind of substantial single player story line. Hell, I’d even love a decent co-op story line, but seeing as its Activision and COD, its likely just to be another 3 hour campaign with all the focus and effort concentrated on the MP component.

I don’t think it would be a good move. The game would slow down dramatically compared to where it is now in Advanced Warfare.

I don’t know many people who buy CoD for the SP. I still haven’t played the Advanced Warfare SP yet. Last one was MW3. CoD’s main focus is the MP, pretty much why the SP is only 5 hours long. The game would be to slow if it was a WW2 setting.

call of duty 2 was perfect, world at war was… less so.
the best was stil MoH pacific assault thought, if felt dirty and gritty, the atrocities commited in the war felt real and the enemy was relentless. tried playing it again recently, and it so isnt what i remember.

gaming went through a WW2 period that totally killed it, but that was 10 years ago now i guess, so going back there now, would feel fresh again, allowing modern shooters time to cool off and re-evaluate etc.

I’d like WWII weapons in MP. Having only four or five faction specific weapons will make it WAAAAY easier to balance the bloody things. The most MP fun I’ve had was with COD and COD2. No funky gadgets, No killstreak OP kill them all bonuses. Just pure FPS, aim for the head, balanced, fun.

I think this is what call of duty needs. Go back to its roots and out of all three of the developers, the only one I trust is treyarch. The only problem with treyarch is the connection has never been as stable as an infinity ward game. Really let down by advance warfare. The exo suit is what gets to me the most. The other day, I was playing hardpoint and just took a step back and watched everything going on around me. The boosting looked ridiculous and it doesn’t belong in call of duty. world war 2 on next gen is a must have. It would feel fresh to go back to basics. going back to world war 2, cod would lose the fans of the hi tech crap but it would gain back the fans they once lost.

Back to WW2 or any where that doesn’t have a bloody exo-suit or jet pack would be fine with me, if i wanted to play that sort of game i would buy Halo, I miss the glory days of MW or World at War and guns that fire bullets and not laser beams and I know im not the only one of a certain generation of gamers who feel this way, game makers would do well to listen to the mumblings of discontent echoing around game lobbies

The WWll package was far superior to what transpired after it’s demise and it left a lot of people venturing out into other avenues. A return to WWll series and the real / natural feel the game had then would certainly bring 1000s back to the game. I support this 1000%
