The Nintendo 3DS was one of the most anticipated handhelds in recent times thanks to its high resolution screen and revolutionary no glasses 3D experience.

However once it got released the complaints about lack of games and gimmicky 3D started pouring in and still to this day any hardcore gamer will happily tell you that it’s a waste of time and a disaster for Nintendo who are already suffering from the (eventual) downfall of the Wii.

So we thought it would be a good time to sit back, check the stats and write the Nintendo 3DS’s obituary.

So let’s look, in the US over the last year the 3DS has managed to sell 4.5 million units and total sales including games and accessories has topped $1.2 Billion. The original DS only managed to sell 2.3 million units and netted $540 million and that went on to become the most popular handheld of all time.

Ah but the world has become a bigger place with more emphasis on gaming so that doesn’t really tell us the real story, the 3DS could still be a failure even if it made over a billion dollars right?

So let’s look at sales across the planet, according to VGChartz the last week’s global sales have the PSVita in the lead with a mammoth 503k sales which isn’t surprising since it was it’s launch week in many countries around the world.

However the 3DS is coming second with 243k units followed by the PS3 with 196k and the Xbox 360 with 157k.

So it’s the second biggest selling console across the planet at the moment.

It’s also sold 16.2 million units so far in it’s lifetime and over the last 12 months it is the number one selling console across the planet just pipping the PS3 by 100k units.

So about that obituary then, maybe we should take a minute to reconsider our feelings on the Nintendo 3DS and accept that possibly Nintendo has done it again and will be dominating yet another console generation.
