Activision look to Eschew Consoles

Activison Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick definitely has plans for world domination, you can almost see the pure undistilled evil in his eyes. He is, of course, going to start with domination of the videogame industry -  and if the performance of MMORPG champion World of Warcraft and the expectations surrounding Call of Duty : Modern Warfare 2 are any sort of gauge, he’s well on his way.

One way that Kotick is looking to prevail over videogaming at large is to untether some of their franchises from the consoles that currently carry them.

In a recent conference the Actiblizz frontman wooed investors with his plans of separating Guitar Hero from consoles, saying :

"I think what the untethered Guitar Hero does is equal the playing field a little more and give you some leverage with first parties when it comes to downloadable content and the business model." He then went a little further telling attendees to "expect many of our products to be playable independent of a console”

Activision’s relationship with console makers hasn’t been particularly rosy of late, and this isn’t likely to placate tensions.

When he wasn’t telling investors how he was going to make them more money, he was busy telling investors how he’s already made them money – by being an evil, soul sucking vampire.

In his own words : "We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games," also admitting that he’s implemented an employee incentive program that “really rewards profit and nothing else."

I had a similar idea earlier this year with fighting games.

There is so much unused space in an arcade stick, why not chuck in some hardware and preload the thing with Some classics live SF2, marvel vs capcom and so on.

guitar hero with an integrated “console” will cost too much to justify only playing guitar hero. Or they will massively underpower the hardware to save costs. Either way, I’m out!
