Angry Birds at Gamescom…how awkward

Easily the most awkward presentation I had to sit through at Gamescom 2012 was a quick 15 minute demonstration of Angry Birds for consoles; not because the game is bad because it’s not. But rather that it’s a game we’ve all played for less than R10 and they are now honestly expect us to pay R400 for it at release.

So there we sat, a group of 6 journalists who all had this knowledge with a preppy PR man and a developer explaining how the console version has improved graphics, includes 3 versions of Angry Birds; the original, Seasons and Rio, and that the game has 5.1 surround sound and 1080p graphics.

But wait that’s not all we are also going to be treated to the biographies of all the birds… seriously… and design sketches of how the birds came about.

What really cracked me up is that they even announced that DLC is planned for the game and that it is going to have Move and Kinect support, so if you don’t want to use a controller you can just swipe to make it happen. Like you do on a phone… for 40 times the price.

Credit where credit is due though, the game looks really good and will include 19 never before seen levels (no it doesn’t include Angry Birds Space) and most importantly it will include global leaderboards so you can see how bad you really are at the game.

All in all this is the poster child for milking of a franchise and it disappoints me that it was even given space at Gamescom.

Angry birds is out later this month.. don’t buy it.
