APB – All Points Bulletin

So if I understand what this game is about and how it works, then I can honestly say this is going to be the biggest game to hit the 360 this year, and possibly since the 360 was created.

APB, All Points Bulletin, is going to be a MMO cops and robbers game. You sign up and choose a side. Are you going to be a criminal or a slightly dodgy law enforcement officer?

Once you have chosen your side and given yourself a look then you enter the world as a new entry in your crisp T-Shirt and jeans. If you survive long enough you will end up looking pretty mean. As in the picture above.

So what is the game about? Well if your a criminal then you are going to be driving around a huge virtual world looking for targets and if you are one of the good guys you are going to be waiting for criminals to do something…

It’s that part which I think is going to give the developers the most trouble, how long would I have to wait before I can bust someone?

Anyway back to the point, the game will automatically assign the law enforcement officials to a crime. So if you and you 5 mates come into the world and hold up a bank the game will either assign 5 fresh faced cops to take you down or 1 highly experienced rambo type cop.

The more criminals you catch, or heists you pull off, the more rank you achieve which then starts to transform you and make you visibly more distinguishable. The problem I see arising here is that some people are going to feel the need to register new characters to pretend that they don’t know what they are doing and inevitably break the matchmaking service.

The really cool thing about this game is that up to 100 criminals and cops are going to be in a city at one time, all doing their own thing. If you watch the video above, which you must, you will see that the cops and armoured car hijackers get into a chase and speed past some poor guy trying to steal a TV. I am presuming here that the cops could just quickly arrest him as well even though they were not assigned to that crime.

This really could be the game of the year (whatever year) when it gets released.  The only question now is if they can pull it off.

Check the IGN Preview for all the details.

APB is currently only going to be released on the PC and Xbox 360. I don’t see any information on cross platform ability so I am still hopeful.

There was a arcade version of this that I played university and more recently on Mame.

Its a nice idea, but I’ll want to see some gameplay before I’m convinced. Also, you’re probably going to need a LOT of bandwidth for a game like this. Something thats not readily available here. 🙁

Typo: The IGN link is a preview, not a review.

To add to the hype, just consider: APB is being done by Realtime Worlds, the guys that brought us Lemmings, Grand Theft Auto and Crackdown! 😀

    Double 😀 😀

@Thomeval, thanks for that it’s one of my more common errors 🙁

I am also worried that we may be completely banned from this game due to our horrible lag…. They may only release directly into the larger countries.

Good point. That is extremely likely. But then again, SA Live users are already ‘illicit’ in any case aren’t they?

@Thomeval, Well we are not really doing anything illegal if we buy pre-paid cards. The problem comes in when we use our credit cards and commit fraud.

They could however still ban us in the same way that they stop us having access to some downloadable content. It’s early days though, lets not jump to to many conclusions.

Well it isn’t ideal, but after playing Halo 3, frontlines and CoD4 on international servers I reckon a game like this where you can focus more on running away than shooting, could go down a treat. The South Africans would all be criminals, but then again that’s nothing new 😉
