Sure, its fun to join a squad and spend an afternoon blasting away at the opposition in a game of Battlefield Bad Company 2, but for those of us who crave absolute perfection, nothing beats earning a few of those rare medals and commendations. My favourite has to be hitting an inattentive sniper directly with my grenade launcher. But, if you’ve got more medals adorning your BFBC2 stat page than Arlington cemetery, then Battlefield 3 is about hit you with more achievements than you’ll know what to do with.

According to posts on the Battlefield 3 blog, there’s going to be more than ten times as many weapon unlocks, with scores of new medals and ribbons available for every kill, ranging from easy to downright impossible.

"Battlefield players are among the most loyal out there,"the blog says. "Our games are literally played for years by our hardcore fans, and we want to actively support that. There should always be something left to achieve in Battlefield 3.”

"Compared to Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3 will have more than 10 times the hardware unlocks spread over weapons, weapons attachments, gadgets, and a huge unlock tree for vehicles alone. Even if you hit the max rank, there is always more glory to strive for with the new concept of Service Stars that we are introducing in Battlefield 3."

"Keep playing and you will be eligible for even further promotion by getting Service Stars added to your weapon skill badge, your vehicle, your kit, and your overall rank. Any time your kill card is displayed, everyone will see exactly how experienced you are with your current equipment. The ultimate bragging right would be for a player to be awarded the rank of Colonel with 100 Service Stars attached, and to have 100 stars in all weapons, kits, and vehicles.

Battlefield 3 looks set to be one of the most comprehensive shooters available later this year, boasting a mix of unlockable goodies with a Battlelog system to really hammer home the idea of a unique online presence for your soldier.

Whether you’re obsessed enough to actually try and sink literally months of time into achieving the rank of Colonel, or are just there for a quick casual game, DICE is adamant that their latest war time escapades game will appeal to a wide range of different players.
