Quake’s return was announced at E3 2016 by developers id Software, and today beta signups are open! It’s going to be a closed beta at first, and you can imagine how sought after these keys are going to be, so go sign up and pray you’re selected.

Quake, in the opinion of many, was one of the first games to be truly seen as an esport. It gave us superstars like Slasher and set the guidelines for modern first-person shooters. We were all excited to hear that the game is making a comeback and developers id Software promised it would be nothing like the current Arena FPS titles around. Quake Champions closed beta will begin in the “coming weeks,” but the sign up page has already gone live.

Nobody knew how much they needed a knew Quake until the reveal of Quake Champions, and now players are eagerly awaiting the launch of the new title. Quake Champions differs in comparison to the old titles bringing in new “champions” with abilities and diverse skills. The developers have promised that these new additions will not change the game, and it will still be heavily skill-based.

Quake Champions will also be playable at PAX East this weekend so expect some actual in-game footage next week.

Critical Hit’s esports guy. I talk about esports and drink whiskey. I also write and cast for elsewhere – but my work here is independent of that.

so taking that as 100% confirmation….

Same here, but I’ve pissed off Bethesda support in the past quite a lot (Doom constantly crashed and they kept telling me to do same troubleshooting steps over and over again), so doubt I’ll get one. Been looking forward to this so much, but past might come back to haunt. Really hope id doesn’t disappoint, and that it (specifically the comp scene, if it becomes big enough) doesn’t become a purely hero-based shooter, ala OW/Paladins
