Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 has a “multiplayer starter pack” on Steam

For a while now, we’ve pondered about the prospect of publishers splitting their traditionally multiplayer-centric games from their single-player components, and selling them separately. It makes sense, especially for games like Battlefield, or Call of Duty where the campaigns cater to a specific subset of players, with most spending their time in the competitive multiplayer.

I’d wager that most players of those sorts of games end up not even touching the single player bits. Activision may have come to realise this. It’s either that, or they’re desperately trying to increase the playerbase for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 on the PC.

On Steam, you can now pick up The Call of Duty: Black Ops III Multiplayer Starter Pack. It’s a multiplayer-only, significantly cheaper version of the game that skips on the superfluous single and cooperative stuff. It’s R199, or $15.

The Multiplayer Starter Pack gives you access to Public Ranked Multiplayer matches and features including Weapon Paint Shop, Gunsmith, Arena, Freerun, Theater, and the Black Market.  What doesn’t t contain?

  • Zombies game mode
  • Campaign game mode
  • Ability to play in Multiplayer custom games
  • Ability to Prestige (your level will be capped at 55 in the Starter Pack)
  • Access to mod tools or modded content (once released)
  • Access to unranked server browser (once released)
  • Ability to Fresh Start your profile
  • The ability to access Dead Ops Arcade II and Nightmares mode

Should you wish, you can then upgrade to the full game. Honestly? I think it’s a great idea. Call of Duty’s multiplayer is still pretty solid, and as much as I’m a fan of them, this year’s single player campaign was a great big letdown for me.

It is, however, a limited time offer – with the multiplayer pack leaving the digital storefront on Monday, Feb. 29, 2016.

What about the other way around?

Seeing as the SP section is so lightweight, we can get that for $1?

The SP is a full 4 player co-op experience, comes along with a full zombies campaign – and these sorts of things take up the bulk of the budget. So no.

The Sp is hardly lightweight…it’s just not great.

They spend most of the budget on something lightweight? They should just do away with SP totally and charge less for the game overall

Exactly, but once again the pricing should reflect that. Everybody was crying when Titanfall came out without SP, but I don’t need to know that I’m fighting to save my beloved 3 legged dog from some zombie ghosts to enjoy a good multiplayer session….

Yeah I have! I loved the campaigns from Bo1 and Bo2 (and WaW). Blacks ops 3 just goes nowhere. I think it’s largely due to the campaign being tailored for the co-op experience; it’s left the actual story in tatters.

Buying DRM games is like taking your money and flushing it down the drain. DRM games are worthless. Like no fucking value. And if you look at how expensive PC games have gotten, PC games are going to suffer at the high prices.

Console games can get away with high prices because there is no fucking DRM and there is value to the product.

So this limited cod multiplayer is just a test because they won’t get away with high DRM prices this year and next year.

    Don’t Support DRM.

They do have value – the value is the enjoyment you get out of playing the game. What you don’t get is resale value. What you get to choose is whether you think the value of the experience less the resale value will be greater than the price you pay.

I don’t buy an apple, or a game, for the resell.

I buy it for the consumption and enjoyment of it.

            February 17, 2016 at 09:00

if i buy a bag of 30 apples and i consume 2 apples. sell the rest.

          • Commander Admiral Chief

            February 17, 2016 at 09:05

            Wrong analogy.

Assuming you are referring to quantity, buying 30 games and playing 2. Then yes, sell the other 28. But why would you buy 30?

Assuming you are referring to percentage, how can you only use 6% of a game? Then you chose wrong.

It is not the same thing, it is not an investment, it is a product to be used.

all sides need to be represented. you don’t take one side and turn it to shit with replies. The last DRM article i read in the comments and read someone saying he has to leave becuase of how people around here are so DRM positive. These comment sections target anti-DRM comments because they want to be anti-ryanza.

So while you second a motion for words that don’t live up true. I read it and it’s no comment of the week. but you want the points highlighted but points need to be highlighted in action not just in words. These people have nice fucking words when it suits them. Don’t be fooled by their words.

There is no controlling the comment section, it is open, friendly, and fun.

            You make it less so.

I’m glad you get your news from here, I really am. And again you are on about the clique.

Yes I agree, but there’s more to it than that. If the option isn’t there then the value you get out of the product itself should counteract that.

Value has two components: tangible – the money, and intangible – the experience.

          • Morne Nell

            February 17, 2016 at 11:18

Having the option to resell is a “privilege” to many products out there, including video games. When this option get misused as in the case with video games / CDs / DVDs the publisher has the right to take that away to protect themselves that is why DRM started.

The windows 10 operating system is taking this to the next level by detecting as soon as you go online any form of illegal software and auto-deleting that software.

Piracy gangs around the world is taking note and some are taking sabbaticals’.

#Piracymustfall and if DRM is the answer then so be it.

If you have a better solution for piracy then please share

I don’t know how old you are or what work you do. I actually work in the software industry for more than 20 years, You think DRM is huge in games it became massive in business a few years ago.

Almost all the software we use has some sort of DRM. Business software usually follow trends in gaming over time. Piracy was a huge problem in the business industry a few years ago. Big companies was pirating software worth millions.

Role players such as Microsoft was approached directly and the question was raced how do we stop this. The industry do not work in isolation think in terms of the music industry and what happened there.

The number of piracy has come down considerably since DRM in software started.

          • Ryanza

            February 17, 2016 at 11:55

drm has nothing to do with piracy. Nothing. you don’t lose your copyrights because your shit is getting pirated by a small number compared to the buying force.

so if you don’t get that. you will keep on shitting out that bullshit like drm is because of piracy. that’s the lie that you believe to accept drm.

          • Morne Nell

            February 17, 2016 at 12:16

It has to do with the revenue you lose. That Revenue might be your salary. Think about that when you get retrenched one day. It is easy to point figures try to help the industry to find a solution.

May I ask why you keep on swearing, I think that also irritates people. Also when you post something stop using no-DRM in your signature. Everyone knows Ryanza stands for no-DRM

I don’t comment allot on this site but felt compelled to do so today

          • Ryanza

            February 17, 2016 at 12:30

your reply was kinda proper. so it’s ok. At least it’s not stealing cars argument.

DRm has nothing to do with piracy. I will say it again. Revenue can not be expected from piracy numbers. you can not say that everyone who pirated would have bought the product if no option to pirate was there.
You can not say that every book, album, dvd, video game borrowed, leant, is a lost sale, lost revenue. salaries will never be based on piracy numbers because piracy is not a lost sale. Believing so just means you bought the bullshit.

The way DRM is being implimented all over, it’s about taking the control away from the copyright holder.

Everytime DRM and piracy is used, that is propaganda to impliment DRM ideas.

          • Morne Nell

            February 17, 2016 at 14:05

You are correct in stating that not all piracy can directly translate into sales figures. A second order of misleading is the claim that whatever “losses” are calculated are “losses to the economy”

Noting that infringement leads to a redistribution of income. We can argue over whether or not that redistribution is good or bad (or societally beneficial or not), but to claim it’s an overall loss to the economy is clearly wrong.

Pc gamers are good examples, they pirate the game but will spend more money upgrading their hardware in order to run the game they desire. Money don’t go into thin air.

If we’re going to be talking about copyright reform, the discussion should be honest, and that means not pretending that the money just disappears from the economy entirely. Like any redistributive economic system, it creates some winners and some losers, and a thorough economic analysis would study carefully who those winners and losers are, and whether having those winners and losers matches up with what the law is supposed to do. Similarly, recognizing that there are always some losers whenever you shift around a redistributive system, it can be worthwhile to look at whether or not it’s necessary to do something to help out those who end up with the short end of the stick.

Unfortunately software companies has been on the receiving end for too long.

Just think of all the gaming companies that has closed down over the years it is very sad. Something need to be done to protect them and to ensure that the percentage of wealth own to them is distributed to them.

Interesting that Microsoft and apple has such different views over DRM

Bill Gates spoke about DRM at CES in 2006. According to him, DRM is not where it should be, and causes problems for legitimate consumers while trying to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate users.

According to Steve Jobs, Apple opposes DRM music after a public letter calling its music labels to stop requiring DRM on its iTunes Store. As of January 6, 2009, the iTunes Store is DRM-free for songs.

The problem is how many restrictions DRM imposes on a legal buyer. An ideal DRM would be one which imposes zero restrictions on legal buyers but makes imposing restrictions on infringers. Even if an ideal DRM can be created and used, in certain cases, it can be shown that removing the DRM will result in less unauthorized copying. For the ideal DRM, the reason why profits can increase is because the demand is elastic. When there are more people legally buying and few people sharing the product, more profits are going to be made.

What the percentage is we just don’t know, but carrying on with the industry in the current state is also not viable.

I don’t know hey. I know it can seem like you’re being ganged up on, and you in turn antagonise and then it all devolves in to an unnecessary spiral of shit flinging. I think disagreement is fine, but there’s no real need for ugliness.

People can agree to disagree about things, and that’s okay. Maybe people are quick to call you out, which angers you, and I can understand that. I can also understand it from others’ perspectives though, as you are sometimes belligerent – or, as is sometimes the case – seemingly looking to provoke and attract attention.

Look, I have no problem with people disagreeing, debating, arguing or anything of that nature in the comments, I’d just really, really prefer if it remained civil and respectful.
