Can the PS3 overtake the Xbox 360 in 2008?

Gamer.blorge.com has an article asking whether or not the PS3 can overtake the 360 in 2008. I would just like to state up front that I highly doubt this is possible and the rest of my thoughts are based on whether or not the PS3 will achieve greater 2008 sales than the 360.

Obviously the Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema Blu-Ray exclusive deal after effects are still being felt around the industry and everyone is scrambling to find out what happens now.

These deals are fantastic news for the Blu-Ray enabled PS3 but I don’t feel they make that much difference to the non HD-DVD enabled Xbox 360. The 360 has never been touted as a High Definition movie player and all this deal means is that the PS3 is not longer at a great risk of being stuck with a lemon. People calling this a death knell for the 360 are far of the mark.

However there are some very critical problems that Microsoft need to sort out and fast. The highest priority issues is the instability of Live over the festive season. This is a paid for service and has always been one of the selling points of the 360. While the PSN is not as mature or capable as Live it is free and stable, two things that go a long way to getting and retaining clients.

The next big problem is that while the 360 has some awesome games coming out this year I am not sure they have the same huge exclusivity titles that the PS3 has. This is the year we expect to see Killzone 2, MGS4, LittleBigPlanet, Gran Turismo 5 and Home… While I have possibly negative interest in a second life clone on a console, I feel I am in the minority here. There is a reason why Second Life and World of Warcraft have millions of users. People enjoy the sociability of it.

So while I don’t see the PS3 overtaking the 360 in lifetime sales this year, they are nicely poised to outsell the 360. However it is January and I highly doubt that Microsoft has shown their true hand yet and we can always rely on Sony doing something stupid before the year is out. Any bets on how much they are going to charge for Home?

I think Lazy is right, PS3 will outsell XboX in 2008, but it will be a long time before the overall sales are greater.

As for the Blu-Ray story, it will boost the PS3 sales but won’t hurt XboX sales too much.

    It’s a good time to be a gamer 🙂

PS: The Wii will continue to destroy both of them for at least another year.

End War is not an exclusive, its on PS3 also. Besides Alan Wake (which we havn’t seen anything off in ages) that list looks pretty weak. I am only looking forward to Ninja Gaiden 2 so far.

I alos believe PS3 will dominate, the Wii will start loosing steam.. not die just loose some steam. Lack of 3rd party games will make gamers look elsewhere

I think the Xmas trend will continue – MS will be dominant in the US, a continuous non event in xenophobic Japan (hey even Samsung, the worlds #1 LCD manufacturer pulled out) And Sony will be dominant in Europe.

Having said that, Sony has spilled a lot of beans on ’08, their surprises may very well be all spent. MS played to ’07 and as we already know have quite a few surprises up their sleeve.

“Having said that, Sony has spilled a lot of beans on ‘08, their surprises may very well be all spent. MS played to ‘07 and as we already know have quite a few surprises up their sleeve.”

By no means. We have only the vaguest information about what many of Sony’s first party teams are up to, from David Jaffe’s eat drink play to Team ICO. Sony has spent the past year building new IPs, it hasn’t even started bringing out next-gen versions of its big franchises like SOCOM yet.

By contrast, most of Microsoft’s first/ second party studios are accounted for – we’re looking at ar least two more years before Mistwalker, Bungie and Bioware (if the latter stays MS exclusive, anyway) deliver something new, and we pretty much know what Rare and Lionhead are up to. Maybe there will be something new from Epic – ie Gears of War 2 – for 08, but I’m not certain of that.

And the xenophobic Japan bit is nonsense. If Microsoft brought out more games that appealed to the Japanese, the machine would sell. American brands from iPods to bourbon sell extremely well in Japan.

One thing MS does have up its sleeve is the ability to do an aggressive price drop this year. Sony, who is currently taking a big hit on every console sold will find it very difficult to compete on price. If the XBox manages to hit below $300(the premium) it will definitely be able to stay with the competition this year. However Sony does have some good exclusives coming in this year. If Microsoft do have more exclusives TBA this year, things could be quite interesting.
