Capcom’s riding a wave of profitability

Developer and publisher Capcom has announced that it’s started its fiscal year off with a bang – saying that profits are up nearly 300 percent from the previous year. You might imagine that it’s mostly due to their practise of nickle-and-diming consumers through pointless costume DLC – but no, it’s actually mostly from game sales.

The games that drove Capcom to mega-profitability? Yeah, you guessed it; Dragon’s Dogma and the rather awful Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Capcom reiterated previous news that Dragon’s Dogma had sold over 1 million copies – though it admitted that the game failed to make much of an impact on the West. Sales in its home territory, however, have "exceeded expectations" ensuring that continued existence of Dragon’s Dogma as a franchise. I’m pretty happy with that news; despite Garth’s opinions on the game, I think Dragon’s Dogma holds a great deal of promise – even if its first game completely lacked story and made up for it by being terrible in other areas too.

I’m somewhat less enthusiastic about Raccoon City being a profit driver – especially if it means we end up with more soulless cash-ins on existing franchises – and considering it is Capcom, cashing in is exactly what you’d expect.

Capcom is set to have a good year, financially at least. Games coming from its stable include Resident Evil 6 (which people will buy no matter how terrible it is), Lost Planet 3, DMC and Okami in HD. I can’t say I’m terribly excited for the giraffe-blowing simulator RE6; from everything I’ve seen it looks like a bit of a disaster. The same, oddly, can’t be said for Lost Planet 3 – which looks like it’s elevated itself beyond its lacklustre sequels. I’m curious to see Ninja Theory’s take on Devil May Cry (and I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt). Okami HD though? Sold!
