Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, two titans battling it out for the hearts of hardcore and casual gamers alike.

Now it’s common knowledge that due to the Cell processors powering the Playstation 3, it’s a much more powerful machine capable of producing better looking, smoother running games. Right?

Wrong.

Since the beginning of the next-gen powerhouses’ lives, Eurogamer.com has been running a feature called “Face-Off”, where they compare games that have been released on both the 360 and the PS3. The issue seems to be that of the eleven features that they have done, each consisting of 5 – 10 game comparisons, the 360 is coming out on top every time, with very few exceptions.

The PS3 is constantly being spoken of as the Cell powerhouse, able to run full glorious 1080p at a quadrillion frames a second, whilst simultaneously washing the dishes and making dinner for the kids. But the truth is, that the results are saying otherwise.

If you’re mouth is half open and you’ve already taken your breath to blurt out “Faannnbbbooooiiii”, keep quiet and listen to my point first.

Consumers need to realise that features such as these lay down the facts, and the fact here is, that even though the PS3 is being marketed as an insanely powerful gaming console, the 360 has more games, which run smoother. To top it all off, most of them are better looking as well.

How many times are PS3 owners going to accept second best after paying nearly double the price? “It has a Blu-Ray player”, you might say. I say “So what?”. Ask yourself a question, did you buy the PS3 primarily for games or movies? That being said, how much time are you going to spend playing games on your console compared to watching films. Not only that, but because the Blu-Ray drive reads so slowly, streaming can become limited, resulting in ridiculously sized installs becoming necessary to assist in the process.

Don’t you feel upset in the slightest that someone who has bought a Xbox 360 is getting not only the same, but better looking, smoother running games for nearly half the price that you spent on your PS3?

Sucks to be you. There, I said it.

——————————————-

Here are some quotes taken from the latest feature, listen to what the folks at Eurogamer had to say, you can view the full article by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.

Soldier of Fortune: Payback

“There’s a hell of lot of detail in the stages here and while the Xbox 360 version manages to cope for the most part, the PlayStation 3 code features a hideously variable frame-rate that manifests right from the beginning of the very first level.”

“you still can’t help but get the feeling that you’re missing a lot of the action due to the ever-changing refresh rate. Matters aren’t helped if you have your PlayStation 3 hooked up to a 1080p display. Yes, there’s in-game upscaling (which looks pretty good) but it introduces another performance hit (albeit minor) to an already sloth-like frame-rate – yet another reason to have your XMB set to 720p even if you have a 1080p display.”

MX vs. ATV Untamed

“Certainly, for PlayStation 3 owners, there’s absolutely nothing here that makes you feel good about owning the console.”

“Resolution is restored to the usual 720p on the 360, edges are more finely filtered, and while screen tear is still ever-present, its impact is nowhere near as bad as it is in the PS3 version.”

Condemned 2: Bloodshot

“there’s a puzzling lack of anti-aliasing in the PlayStation 3 game, and the frame-rate is a touch less consistent”

“The only other issue gamers appear to have been having with the PS3 game is some kind of audio distortion when playing over HDMI, taking the form of a weird clicking or a split-second of white noise. There are also drop-outs over Toslink optical audio, none of which is a problem for Xbox 360 owners.”

Reasons why I feel good about owning a PS3:

    Free online gaming
Online Store, which is supported here in SA, charges me in Rands
I prefer the Dual Shock 3
Exclusive games that I enjoy playing
Triple A Multiplat games are the same on both systems if not slightly better on the PS3
    Yes.. Blu Ray movies
and ease of mind that the system is relatively reliable

Not much but im sure it will get better..
In a perfect world i would have both!

This is the 11th cross platform review and I cannot remember a single one where the PS3 won..

Again… all of those games are made on the 360 dev platform. (Cos it codes easily like a Windows PC). Obviously when you then translate the game into a PS3 game the transition is going to be poor.

    Hugs and kisses.

By now it must be clear that the Xbox360 is primary for games and it does that function very well. The PS3 has a lot more functions, but is less good at the one that matters the most -> gaming. The only reason why I want a PS3 is for the exclusives, nothing else. I’m not too big on watching Blu-Ray or even DVD’s.

Burnout was apparently going to be better on the PS3 but when it was released I didn’t see a single site that gave Burnout the win…

I think Burnout was actually a tie when all was said and done.

To be perfectly honest my normal eyes can’t tell the difference in most of these games anymore.

I don’t get why you insist on leaving out some of the PS3’s features.

Blu-Ray is one of the reasons i got a PS3, now you are telling me it doesn’t count because i may have bought it primarily for games.

Well what if i don’t want to play online? Must i insist that you leave out the fact that XBL is better than the PSN?

    Of course not.

Yeah i paid more for the PS3 and i’ll admit that some of the games are playing better on the 360, does it piss me off? Not at all.

I still have a great time with the game, plus i get free online and i don’t have to worry about 2 major things:

RROD and the fact that if MS loses hen they may dump the system like they did with the first XboX.

If you want to highlight the 360 then mention the things that the PS3 can’t have at all like: Gears of War, Bioshock, Halo3 etc. I’m playing The Orange Box at the moment which is one of the worst ports i’ve seen and guess what? It’s still great.

I don’t think the PS3 is without its uses; it’s the best Blu-ray player out there, and currently the only one that supports Profile 2.0. The Bluetooth remote is also kinda cool – no need to point it directly at the receiver.

@jinja, ease of development is a major feature for any platform, gaming or otherwise! If the devs prefer the 360 then clearly it does some things better.

The biggest point of the Eurogamer Face-Offs is to compare the cross platform games. Not any extra features that a console may have.

What needs to be accepted is that when the PS3 was launched we were all promised that it would graphically blow everything else out of the water. It hasn’t happened and from everything that we have seen it won’t happen.

As far as I know MS had to dump the Xbox because of a dispute they had with NVIDIA re the price of the GPU. As a result NVIDIA stopped making the GPU leaving MS high and dry since they did not own the rights to the technology. This is why they partnered up with ATI this time round as well as securing the rights to the tech to avoid the same happening this gen.

Well, lets compare this to Linux vs Windows.

Linux is now the MUCH stronger more capable platform. But because of DirectX making things easier for game developers and the strong install base, Windows is killing Linux.

Does that make Windows better than Linux? No.

Does that make the stupid people out there think so? Yes.

I personally don’t find Linux better than Windows…

It’s harder to develop on, there are less applications for it, it doesn’t run 99% of the applications I need for work and it isn’t user friendly enough for my wife and kids to use.

Yes it’s more stable and faster but does that make it better?

I agree though, for you Linx is better and the PS3 is obviously the console of choice for millions of people. However when comparing cross platform games the 360 is head and shoulders above, this has become a fact.

Just remember guys even if the PS3 is the powerhouse why is developers going to spend more time and money and more time to get a game out on ONE platform so that it looks better.

It just doesn’t make any sense from a business point of view.
Businesses is nowadays dedicated to get games out as fast as posibble with cost savings as a main objective.

So from my point of view is that games will look almost the same on both platforms until the end of the life cycle both the major consoles (just remember this excludes exclusive games that only comes out on that specific console for the entire duration of its life)

What I find interesting is that it actually seems like things are getting worse for the PS3. The last few versus, the PS3 pulled in a few draws, it’s even pulled in a win or two a few months back, but this time it’s 360 all the way. admittedly the newer games are more graphically intensive than the last few reviews, so does that mean we’re starting to hit the limits of the PS3?

For the same reasons, Linux is the dominant platform for web development and deployment. You *could* do the same things in Windows but it takes more effort and capital. Horses for courses, not so? 🙂

I never said that one game platform is better than the other for having won over the developers. But you cannot discount the fact that this impacts on the end user.

You know, what I find is that a lot of people use the excuse that the 360 was the lead dev platform and that the PS3 version had to be ported and that if it were the other way around, the PS3 version would be the better one. But the truth is, that most devs ARE making the 360 the lead platform, which means most PS3 games ARE coming in second best. For a Company like Sony to charge so much for their console, you would think that they would have been securing deals with developers to use their platform as the primary to ensure lots of high quality games, and not choppy, worse looking games. But instead, all they can do is go on about how they are making a kajillion Moneys from the PS2 still, and they will be making a Kabijizillion more from the PS3 in about 6 years. I think its very arrogant.

Amazing GTA was actually on the PC, PS2 and the Xbox in the day, it was a timed exclusive on the PS2 yes, but it was moved to all the other platforms. People have got to start facing facts the 360 just has a better GPU, and capable of using it’s RAM better, + the fact that it actually has double the PS3 in the first place, and the DVD rom can still read faster too.

What I also find amusing is PS3 fanbois going off about Housers comment that PS3 version is ‘warmer’ and the 360 more clinical.

Now besides that being a matter of telly tweaking, it’s funny every time someone say something like that, it’s all giggles until someone actually runs the game and the PS3 framerate turns into mush. Assassins Creed, Dark Sector, Viking, the list goes on. I highly advise humility until we have a proper hands on.

The superior quality of Xbox multiplatform releases is also reflected in the respective sales figures. X360 accounts for 70% of COD4 console sales , 60% of AC (European PS3 owners loved this game) , 75% of RSV2 sales etc. , etc.
As long as this trend continues developers will keep leading on the Xbox. One would think that 18 months into its life the PS3 would have been sussed – maybe the hardware just is not what Mr K promised.

I would have to agree with the last poster about the site being fanboyish about it. They even state “I don’t mean to sound like a fanboy” however they’re also not very shyly saying “The PS3 is without any doubt whatsoever the nicer version”. They also completely write off DLC as something that people won’t even be interested in. As if we’re all so fickle as to forget about a release like GTA. “Gears 2 is out, I don’t like GTA anymore.” GTA is one of those games people play a year or more later just for the fun of messing around, add to that another set of episodes and I doubt anyone’s going to be avoiding it.

I own both systems myself although I buy games primarily for the ps3. Reason being is reliability. If the 360 wasn’t such a gamble I wouldn’t even have to think about which system I would buy games for. It’s really too bad, when I think about the reliability of the 360 I feel it’s value is hurt in my mind. I am curious to know if the newest versions of the console have actually fixed this problem or if it’s still ongoing.

Not to knock your post, but that has happened already. And Sony is proud to announce this fact. Many devs have already stated that the PS3 is now the lead console. The first showing of this was in Burnout. But not all games coming out this first half will feature this. Madden X20 lead design is on the PS3.

Now reading through most of the post on this article, a lot of individuals are misinformed. Yes for the games listed above the 360 was the lead console but at the same time when it is ported it does not make it better for the PS3. The 360 is easy to program period. the PS3 is also easy, what makes it difficult is that it takes more to do a simple program because of the architecture of the cell.

Devs noticed this and that is the reason for the change. Sad to say we won’t truly notice it until the end or 2nd half of this year. Just so you know why devs made the change or what they are going through here is a small example.

Would you rather program in peices and port to a system that will recognize the pieces, or would you program in chunks and port it to another system only to have to break everything up in pieces, seriously what do you think would be more effecient. If you miss place a line of code it can throw off everything.

You guys are such idiots if you think that the 360 is a better machine because of the proof shown above. The Crossplatform games that ” look better on Xbox” were created for 360 first and then ported across… fact of the matter is Ps3 is far more complex to develop for than the 360 so game makers IMO get lazy and take short cuts… dont believe me? Look at what Rockstar said about GTA V .. Microsoft will need to come up with something soon because the storage of the 360 DVD is not enough anymore and your R 1999 360’s do not have hard drives at all so very soon you will be coughing up another R 999.00 for a 20GB hard drive…ROFL.I am a Sony fan yes but not out of blind fanboy stupidy, I looked at my options ( all my options ) and PS3 came out tops as did the ps2. As for your cross platform games… you can keep em.. future Ps3 games will be playable only on PS3.

Maybe the author is ignorant enough to know that for the time being the machines are about equal. just listen to the criterion guys podcast talking about the two machines and Burnout Paradise. Forming an opinion based on lazy-ass ports does not count. If a developer is lazy to do proper PS3 code does not mean the machine sucks. And yes i have a 360 and a PS3.

Then how come people like Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Infantry Ward, and Epic (even Bethesda Softworks who made Oblivion look even sharper and better on the PS3) can create great looking games then? Obviously, its not the hardware, it all comes down to the developer(S), and a great deal of them must suck at programming for the PS3 or not that savvy at porting games to it. Even Insomniac recently stated that they are willing to share their technology with other developers because they know how to program the right way for the PS3 and know these sorry ass devs out here, don’t know what the hell they are doing.

At least from my experiences while playing online. I happy to be an owner of both systems ( and the Wii ) just so I can be able to play whatever I wish regardless of what system it is on.

I see a lot of arguments, much of it based on fragmented knowledge about hardware and a lot of fanboy-fueled debate.
    It was inevitable.
The PS3 is flawed. Get over it. However, it’s not a failure – there are redeeming qualities about it that make it a damn good piece of hardware to own. For starters, it has the games that *I* like to play. Remember… gaming is a personal experience and I say: who gives a flying f*ck about what others think.
Yes, go extol the virtues of Mass Effect and BioShock – those are astonishingly good games. But those aren’t the games I’m interesting in, save BioShock.
*Gasp*… is that what you’re thinking?
Just because they’re great games doesn’t mean I *have* to play and just because they’re not on the system I own doesn’t mean it’s any lesser.
I’ve been using my PS3 as my Media Center and while I know the 360 can do the same, I find the PS3 more flexible in terms of options. Multiplatform games? I’m not sad enough that I need all my games to look like the “best. evar!”, as long as it’s functional and looks generally sharp, I’m not going to discriminate. If a game fares poorly on the PS3, then I won’t buy it: simple.
And now you may think: then *what* will you buy?
It’s not all about AAA titles. I believe in catering to my preferences as a gamer and even critically subpar games can be enjoyable for the one who seeks it. Thus the PS3 has not disappointed me.
All in all, I’m pretty damn happy about it and I don’t have any reason to “hate” on the 360 and Wii because they *are* good consoles which cater to their audiences.
Anyone believing otherwise, is hopelessly prejudiced.

Also, that’s a typical Sony fan response, either rip on the game, or the people who developed it, where the blame should lie on Sony. It’s misguided disgruntledness

I have both, love the PS3 and play it the most lately, but honestly, i know that the 360 is capable of better graphics than the PS3. I don’t need another round of Eurogamer shoot out until it sinks in. I’m over it, i realize it, i love my 360, b/c it is the best GAMES machine right now. I love my PS3 b/c it is the best jack of all trades right now and i don’t worry about it breaking on me (which is a big one) 😀 , and the games aint half bad either.

But i swear, if the PS3 was so great, it shouldn’t matter which console was lead platform, or which development house did it, or etc. etc. No more excuses, just get over it.

I wouldn’t put all the blame on the PS3 itself but more so on the devs. We have heard countless times that the PS3 is much harder to work with compared to the 360 dev kits. Digital Extremes who did Sector Dark almost cancelled the PS3 version because it took much longer to complete, it was the same with Turok. More devs are getting the hang of it but its why the 360 most of the time is the lead console they work on for multiplatform games.
Its not like the 360 dosen’t share any of these problems you listed. Mass Effect is perfect example that has a number of pop up textures and framerate problems. Still a great game but its full of graphical glitches.

What other people have pointed about devs like Naughty Dog putting Uncharted is a pefect example of what the PS3 can produce. Devs just need to put more effort and give themselfs much more time and they can put out great looking games. I still look at Uncharted among one of the best looking games to come out so far on this gen of consoles. I know Naughty Dog only makes PS3 games but it shouldn’t be any differet for other devs. Every dev receives the same devs kits as everyone else. Its all about the time and effort and getting the hang of using the PS3 hardware.

A lot of people are missing the point. Like SlippyMadFrog said, its not ABOUT the consoles, its about the fact that people who have spent that money on a ps3 are getting second best. Yes it is the devs fault, yes they need to put more time in. I still believe that some people give the PS3’s internals too much credit, but that doesnt change the fact that due to the intricate nature of the PS3’s architecture, the devs have trouble making games for it.

Truth is that on the important games – CoD4, GTA4, Dark Sector, Burnout Paradise, Army of Two, DMC 4 – the platforms have largely reached parity. I know a number of PS3 only peoople who are happy with those games.

The 360 has also had some pretty lousy ports – Bully, for example, is shocking and you’re better off playing the PS2 version. Let’s not even go to PC ports like Dark Messiah of Might & Magic. SoF3 and ATX are in the same league as those, really.

I have both and I prefer playing on the PS3 for a few reasons worth noting:

    1. The X makes way too much noise
    2. The longer I play the X the closer I get to the 3 red lights of death
    3. My X keeps giving disc read errors despite the disc being spotless
    4. I have a lot of faith that eventually developers will figure out the cell processor thing and the games will look better
    5. For whatever reason I don’t feel like the quality of the hardware on the X is as good as the PS
    6. I have a vague sense that splitscreen on the PS can be run on 2 screens using both HDMI ports but never tried and not sure if that’s even true. If it, this is a killer feature seeing as I have 3 screens

Asides from this, I play both interchangeably and am fully prepared to admit the X looks better most of the time, for now. My 2c.

    Firstly: XBox = PS3 = Great Console.

Now to the fanboys on both sides:

PS3, stop blaming the developers, if the games are crappy – blame Sony. You are paying a significant premium for a console that performs the same way or worse than its cheaper rival. Sony should have created a console that was easy to develop for – they didn’t, so blame them. Those developers work 7 days a week 10 – 18 hours a day for months on end to create the games that you play – so stop calling them lazy – they work damn hard! Yes, we know the PS3 has all these extra features – but did you buy wifi hotspot with HD media streaming or a gaming console? Instead of designing a good console Sony over-hyped an average one.

XBox, stop chewing CD’s, breaking down, burning peoples houses down etc. The fact that you have an extended warranty does make the fact that you are buying an unreliable console any better. Actually it stinks – MS still has not identified the real cause of the RROD problem. They have acknowledged it – in the face of a million complaints – which is a good thing. Also, the different hardware specs means that games will play differently on different consoles – I know, my AC stuttered and dropped frames while Lazy’s ran perfectly. WTF?

Wii – ok I’ll stop laughing now.

graphically there isnt much in it at the mo i only buy exclusive titles on ps3 otherwise i just use my xbox as friends system online is better and you get points for your profile.
fair enough the sony has the nice blu-ray drive which looks neat on my hd screen but when u mostly get content in divx xvid etc you wont be rushing out buying them anytime soon 🙁
so its bascially not used that
xbox has a clear lead and sony need to get their act together in my opinion, until things like home come along and games are better developed its gunna play second fiddle for now.

Glad I was out in the bush on Flamebait Friday for this one!

What I’m not so glad about is the fact that Friday marked a turning point for lazygamer.co.za as a source of impartial news for me. When one of the authors has the audacity to post an article that basically says, “Xbox is better! Sucks to be you, PS3 owner.”, there can be no question as to where the bias exists.

I don’t visit this site on a daily basis to listen to some grossly-biased Xbox fan trying to make me feel REMORSEFUL about my purchase! Nick, if the Eurogamer comparisons make you feel better about yourself, thats great. Xbox owners SHOULD feel vindicated when they see how their console is outperforming the PS3, good for them! Does this mean the Xbox is better than the PS3? No. Should PS3 owners suddenly regret buying their consoles? Of course not.

No Nick, I am not upset in the slightest that Eurogamer says that cross-platform games look better on the Xbox than they do on my PS3. If Sony flat-out came and admitted that the 360 was more powerful, I STILL would not trade my PS3 for an Xbox. I love my PS3 for a million reasons that I could never love an Xbox. When you’ve used both consoles extensively, it doesn’t take long before you realize which one feels like it *should* be half the price of the other and that is why I would gladly pay the premium again.

LazyGamer, you need to start editing the articles that your other contributers are posting as they are ruining the integrity of your site. This article is the sort of fanboy-tripe that you expect to see in Youtube comments, not on a reputable blog such as this…

and I take it the free PSN is also better 🙄

You may be interested in knowing that the last console poll I had actually showed more support for the PS3 than the 360 on this site…

This article really has opened up some wounds though hasn’t it

This is for the whole SDF:

    1. It was an FF article. The last few weeks have been pro Sony bashing the 360’s weekly sales figures. Nick has well and truly pissed the entire PS3 fanboy cult off. You rose to it, he wins. 😛

    2. Instead of whining like a bunch of 3 year old girls, why not write some balanced examples to demonstrate your great impartiality and be a light unto the nations of the world.

    3. If you really can’t handle it, leave. There are plenty of heavily pro Playstation sites out there, PSU, SDF, Gamepro, Gameplayer the list goes on. Or better yet start your own.

You know its post answers like this that really put me off of making any comments on the net cause you get idiot come backs like this.

I KNOW THE XBOX 360 ARCADE HAS NO HARD DRIVE THAT IS MY POINT!!!!

I was talking about what Rockstar said about future games, if you want to play these awesome games of the future you will probably HAVE TO buy a hard drive for your machine in order to play it to its full potential.

Please people if you are gonna retort.. think before you type.

Only if you promise to before you post in the first place.

Funny, it was actually Sony that said console don’t need Hard drives first. Go figure. I guess it’s amazing what you can do with a bit of cheap flash RAM.

i just want to say if the majority think that that the 360 is better tha ps3- why is it that most stores that sell ps3 and 360 games accessories and consoles eg cna regies have stopped selling 360 consoles and most of the games and accessories that come with it? The 360 has had counless returns due to the 3 red lights and other related problems. Thats popably why the console is cheaper than ps3 and why 360 sells more but doesn’t last as long after the warrantee. just a thought…
