Cheaper PS3 and Xbox 360 in Spring?

YES! Ars Technica have a a resident ninja mole who dishes out console industry inside news. While rumours of PS3 price cuts have been circling the internet since roughly the dawn of time, this particular ninja spy tends to get things right. And this time, the mole is saying that a PS3 price cut is indeed on the cards.

According to this particular Shinobi, both Sony’s PS3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 are headed for some overhauls in the run-up to the holiday season.

The PS3

Apparently the 80Gb system is being phased out, to be replaced by a 160Gb model. Sony is hoping to sell through these upgraded units before finally releasing the rumoured PS3 slim at a reduced price. This is expected to launch in the US in their Fall. Hopefully we’ll be seeing them locally sometime in Spring.

There’s no indication as to the magnitude of the price reduction, but the newer, ostensibly cheaper to produce PS3 slim will no doubt aggrandise* the platform’s momentum.

The Xbox 360

Holding out to buy that 60Gb Pro model? Hold out some more, as it seems they too are being phased out, with the 120Gb Elite taking its place as the the bastard middle-child. Expect a bundle or two to get current units off of store shelves in the interim. Considering Microsoft’s push to digital distribution (with entire Xbox 360 games to be available on Marketplace) increasing the storage of the base online SKU makes sense.

Read the whole scoop over at Ars Technica for anything my tequila-induced hangover may have caused me to miss.
