Yeah I don't think so

You may have heard of the Unreal Engine, it pretty much powers every single quality title available on consoles at the moment.

Okay that’s a bit of an exaggeration but it’s still the most dominant engine in the industry at the moment and Unreal Engine 4 is coming out now but it’s bad news for consoles gamers, the next consoles might not be powerful enough to utilise it.

According to Cliffy:

There is a huge responsibility on the shoulders of our engine team and our studio to drag this industry into the next generation

It is up to Epic, and Tim Sweeney in particular, to motivate Sony and Microsoft not to phone in what these next consoles are going to be. It needs to be a quantum leap. They need to damn near render Avatar in real time, because I want it and gamers want it—even if they don’t know they want it

The rest of the interview is very interesting indeed and well worth reading over here.

It would be a sad day indeed if the new consoles were revealed to be underpowered and not capable of matching even our current PC technology.

This could be one of the reasons we all expected to see the new Xbox and PS4 at E3 this year and now Sony and Microsoft have announced that they aren’t really showing anything at all. The feedback they received from the developers could have forced them both into a rethink and hopefully the new consoles that will be released toward the end of next year will be mindblowing.
