CNET writer slams the PS3

Don Reisinger, from CNET, has slammed the PS3’s desperate attempts to win back support this morning. It seems the rumbling controllers, price cut and new colours are just not doing it for him.

However he feels Sony is missing the boat, as do many of us, by not concentrating more on software.

Sony is under the impression that a lower price on its console will stimulate sales and help it attain the lead it used to enjoy. But with no exclusive blockbuster titles in sight, what’s the impetus for us to run to the store and buy the Playstation 3?

Now I completely agree with him there, games consoles should be primarily used for gaming. Anything else is a bonus but if you fail at the first hurdle why should I buy the console. He sums it up well when he states

The Playstation 3 is on life support and unless Sony starts grasping at something it can hold on to, it should stop worrying about how the public perceives its hardware and start doing what it can to bring exclusive blockbuster titles to the console. So far, the Playstation 3 is the biggest gaming blunder we have seen in years.

Just like its been said since the PS3 launch, give us GAMES Sony not revised SKUs and Home crap. NGS & Heavenly Sword are just a tip of what the PS3 is capable of but give us more dammit!

Personally, I’m planning on buying an Xbox 360 later this year (more or less around bonus time!) and believe me, I’ve researched everything about all three of the “Next-gen” consoles.

Microsoft did something right with their Xbox, as they do with most of their other hardware endeavors, and I feel they really took a big look at what the GAMER in all of us wants and strived to give it all back to us.

The only thing that still draws me to the PS3 is the release of Final Fantasy XIII on the PS3… hopefully Square-Enix will open their eyes and see a market for the game on the Xbox as well?

@Tiny – You wont go wrong with the current crop of AAA titles out for the X360 this month. They should keep you very busy until you find the games you enjoy hitting the PS3 next year ( hopefully ).

What lineup is that Abev? The fictional lineup for the PS3 or what is currently available? Just look at the delays for the Orange Box, UT3 and other possible PS3 hot titles. Any kind of trend developing here?

On the contrary the X360’s lineup is just getting better even AFTER the launch of its flagship title(s) for 2007. Please abev, just admit that 2007 wasnt a good year for the PS3 and get over it.

Thats a matter of opinion. Lets just look at software units sold after christmas to determine who had the better lineup.

I have no problem that ps3 has had a really really terrible year, but things are def starting to turn and I predict that the ps3 will really start to own the war in 2008.
Sales will prob reflect that xbox/wii had the best christmas, but IMO the ps3 will def make a mark in catching up.

The thing is that we do not know how good those games are going to be. The same can be said for the Xbox360 exclusives as well. I think we all can agree that Lair and Heavenly Sword didn’t make an impact as initialy thought even though those titles looked like system movers. The same can happen with Uncharted and Ratchet as well, who knows?

Not really sure what your point is slippy?
But yea all things could go south, well all except for ratchet and clank of course. That game is gonna rock!!

@Tiny – SE has sat up and taken notice of the 360, with the multiplatform “last remnant” and now 360 exclusive “Infinite undiscovery” (Which goes down as my “most bizarre game name of the year” 😉 ) And don’t forget the 360 also has exclusive Lost Odyssey. So While you may not get (still unconfirmed) FF13 there’s new & exclusive JRPG IP coming to the 360, which is really exciting.

My take has always been that Sony came into this round too cocky. They were going to lay down “THE” system and everyone would grovel at their feet. At their leisure they’d cost reduce till everyone had a turn, like they did last round.

Unfortunately they’ve been double teamed and are reeling from the 1-2. The 360 came in and whipped away the high value enthusiasts, and Wii grabbed the mass market. Unfortunately, there in lies Sonys dilemma.

You can pitch Ratchet, Drake and Singstar, and while they look to be good games, they’re still E-T type games, which fall towards the $250 Wii market. They’re going up against Mario Galaxy, and that’s a fight I don’t think even the Master Chief would want to take on.

The point I was trying to make is that we should not look at the quantity of games coming out for each system because 1 excellent game is better than 3 mediocre games. I’m not saying the PS3 exclusive coming out WILL be bad but
Haze and Uncharted are new IP’s, we won’t know until it’s released.
We all can speculate beforehand but we will only know after christmas who had the better lineup.

Here we go again 🙂 . Oh, well, to give my opinion:

The 360 has had by far the best year out of the current generation of consoles.
The Wii is well, the Wii. And that is not a potshot. That means that it plays Mario. Mario is a very very very big deal :).
The PS3 will, and I go on record right now, be the console to own from next year onwards. Just watch. Oh, and can I get a “Metal Geeeeeeeeaaaaaaar” 😀 ?!

From the PS3 i want Haze ( if its exclusive ) and I wanted UT3 but seeing its delays shortening its exclusivity period I think I will wait.

As far as I know as long as the ps3 version of UT3 gets delayed so will the xbox version, i.e. it will always have the same gap between the release’s.
