Gaming is growing; the explosion of casual, social and mobile gaming has brought millions of people under the gaming umbrella – earning companies like Farmville developers Zynga and the folks behind the Angry birds phenomenon Rovio hundreds of millions of dollars. Most gaming money though, is still earned from the “core.”

In this delightful infographic, the folks at Statista have detailed the transition of video games from being a form of entertainment only available as physical media to one that’s digitally propagated  Most interesting to note is that even though the audience for casual and mobile games is larger, most of the money is still being generated by console and PC games. According to the infographic, just 4% of total industry revenue is made by casual games. Of course, that’s only true for big brand AAA titles with incredible marketing budgets. for the average small developer, the mobile and casual market is far more lucrative.

And though physical media still accounts for most sales digital delivery is increasing. In 2009, there was an 80:20 split between physical and digital sales – but by last year that figure’s shifted to a 69:31 split.
