Destiny is a lot longer than you think

2 min read

Destiny was released a few days ago and seeing that the game is so reliant on being populated by other people no media in the world received advanced copies. So here we sit a full 3 days later and there are only 8 Metacritic affiliated sites who have posted reviews yet.

The top score so far is 95/100 while the Escapist decided it wasn’t worth more than 60/100.

They had some points that I agreed with and some that I felt were a little harsh and then they wrote this gem

By far Destiny‘s strongest component is its competitive multiplayer, the Crucible, bringing together a series of traditional first-person shooter gametypes and letting players duke it out with whatever weapons and skills they’ve acquired.

And that’s where I know they lost the plot, well for me at least. I have literally no interest in the PvP side of Destiny. But yeah each to their own.

Anyway back to the headline, there are a lot of reports that the single player game can be completed in 6-8 hours with this being backed up by screenshots of the second screen app showcasing people completing the game in 6 hours. However IGN have been recording every second of their experience in preparation for their review and now going back over the recordings they have seen that even though their story completion time is marked as 6 hours 11 minutes it has actually taken them over 18 hours to get to this point.

I’m not nearly finished the story yet and I’ve been playing for around 4-5 hours so I can definitely agree with them there. The mission clock appears to only count the time you spent directly working on the story, no side quests or exploration. Which are actually required for you to rank up high enough to take on the bad guys in the main quest.

And just in time to stop the complaints about a game only having 18 hours of playtime; Bungie has announced that the first Raid and Crucible challenges are about to be released. Between today and Monday Bungie will be hosting an intense 3v3 deathmatch experience where guardians can fight to win Crucible Gear, Crucible Marks and Crucible Reputation.

But more exciting, for me, is that the first Raid will open up on the 16th of September. You will be expected to be at level 26 to complete this Raid entitled Vault of Glass and according to Bungie this is going to eat hours of your life so be prepared. We’re still working on our review, which we’ll have for you early next week.

Even if I were to get 20-30 hours out of the game, is that really enough to justify the top billing hype surrounding it. An amazing game of this scale should have enough re-playability to keep me busy for 6-12 months. Seems a lot of opinion at the moment is that interest in this game will fizzle out before the first bit of DLC drops.

The first DLC, raids, drops next week. I won’t even be at a high enough level to try next week… Raids will also apparently take 6 hours each or something so there is a lot more than 30 hours in the game

The cap is higher than lvl 20. To do the raid above, Vault of Glass, you need to be lvl 26. I have played for the last 3 nights with about 12 hours invested and I’m only lvl 12. I’ve done all the earth and moon missions, still got Venus and Mars. I’m dying to get to lvl 26 so I can take on the big raids.

You still gain levels after 20 but it depends on your gear (they have a new attribute called “light”). I’m currently just about to hit 21 with my current gear, but my buddy and wingman is already at level 24 (he managed to get some purples during a strike)

I spent 5 hours just playing solo and messing around on Earth last night and I’ve just started. I don’t know what the expectations from other people was but I am hooked, there are already parts on Earth I found that are way above my level so I will need to get stronger weapons and level up so that I can go back there and clean the place out. You have basically four parts to the game(I might be wrong). Story missions(quests), Strike missions(Raids), PVP and exploration. So the re-playability definitely is there.

See I played the alpha and beta, and had a couple of those public events as well. I’ll admit there is a brief moment where I got a sense of novelty from it, but when that passed I felt like it could have easily been something simulated by AI, and it wasn’t really that special as a gaming moment. Honestly I think its a bit of a gimmick.

For one, it’s still got enough replay-ability to keep you going longer than 30 hours. Also, 20-30 is about right for a $60 game with no subscription. It’s the same price as the last CoD game, which took me about 6 hours… maybe.

I played that much talked about “Devil’s Lair” mission with some guys during the beta, and I genuinely found it a bore. 30 minutes of shoot shoot shoot duck shoot shoot shoot duck, repeat times infinity, just to take out that tank thing. I don’t find that rewarding in the least.

Me too, and it’s what I like about Warframe. With alerts I can just join a random group, we do the mission, done. With planet side missions it can be a bit trickier, depending on the mission some are more practical to solo than others & there aren’t always people starting a new level the same time you are. Occasionally I’ve gotten lucky & joined another person or two that was doing the same stuff I was & we go do a few levels together.

Also generally don’t want to plan ahead to play a game.

It plays it SAFE and it sits in the grey area between Halo and Borderlands. It has no Halo narrative and no Borderlands soul.
If this upsets you tunnel visioned marketing sponges out there then don’t go to N4G because thats where they are all slamming the game.

Nothing wrong with the game. Its all the bullshit lies and transparent marketing that offend me.

The gamers do not want 24hour DRM, Fine, we will force them into it by making games with TITANIC budgets that require mandatory 24hour single player DRM. Silly gamers.
Once they get used to the idea like the first on disk DLC and episodic content the sooner we can milk the silly brats some more.

By DRM sorry you mean the game has to be online the whole time?? But this is an online game not a single player game that’s it. It’s like saying why is World of Warcraft always online I don’t get your point if you want a single player game play a single player game this is not for you it’s an online game nothing wrong with that… I agree single player game’s should not always have an online connection it makes no sense it’s stupid but for a game like this it has to be online all the time.

I like the way they doing DLC in this game there will be expansions with story and new content to make the game playable longer new raids new strikes that’s how you keep your player base, WoW has been doing it for years. I actually want to play this game for a long time with new content being released, I am not gona go and buy stupid comsetic DLC stuff but if DLC adds a story and new gameplay missions then bring it on.

But this is my opinion at least you entitled to your own.

From what I’ve seen, Destiny plays like a single player with some co-op missions added in there. Destiny is not an MMO. The major thing missing from Destiny is a single player game experience. A lot of the hate for Destiny you will see comes from 2 thing, repetition and lack of single player game.

When I look at Destiny, the gameplay, what you get from the game, expectation from a Bungie game, what should have been in the game, what is missing from the game, then I can see that the game was created around this always online server based DRM. It’s as simple as that.

You can’t say Destiny is trying to be a WOW game, trying to be a co-op game, trying to be a single player game, trying to be is not the same as being. Destiny misses the mark of defining what it is.

Destiny is just a good average shooter that went nowhere. So it’s fair to say that Destiny is just online DRM and a repetitive game, that feels like it’s missing something.

          • Nikola

            September 12, 2014 at 12:34

But did you actually play the game?? That’s a thing it’s so much more than an average shooter and whoever Actually played the game will know that!! and thats my problem as well ppl don’t even play it but like to judge like their experts on it…Any mmo once you hit a level cap is about repetition grinding bosses raids and dungeons for better gear so you character grows in power that’s the catch with Destiny as well and if that’s not your thing cool. Every single thing in the game you can do co-op so I don’t know what you mean by some some co-op.

Went nowhere after being out for 3 days really you decided that already without even playing the game and the game not even being a week old. Regarding single player I agree it’s is not the best story I have ever played but it’s pretty good better than any shooter out there I can thing of on new systems.

It’s not everyone’s cup of tea and that’s fine with that but there are sooo many thing to do in the game actually there is a bit of everything. I honestly don’t understand all the hate, it’s way more innovative than CoD and stupid Battlefield which come out every year and are absolute trash.

That argument tends to assume that a person doesn’t know anything until the game is played. Now, we are living in the information age. That argument might have worked in the 90s but this is 2014, Youtube Destiny and you can find the game from start to finish. Information without playing nor buying.

I get that you like the game and want to defend the game. But Bungie should have created a much, much better game than what Destiny is. Destiny does fit really well into Activision vision for games. But if this is a sign of the direction Bungie is taking with games for the future, it’s not going to be great.

Just to add, Bungie never said that Destiny was a MMO. MMO was used to mask the online DRM part of the game.
Online DRM building sim games. Online DRM racing games. Now online DRM shooting games. Seems online DRM found a way in with reception from gamers. So expect more of it.

            Don’t support DRM.

It looks like a winner. They just need to give it more soul with character branches and expand the universe lore. I am sure they have big plans for this game and after its huge sales success I see massive amounts of episodic content that will flesh out the game and give it some character depth. I can understand why they do not want reviews out there so early.

Lets just hope they do not take advantage and start milking the shit out of it. I want to see the annual level cap increase being free.

I agree with you completely when it comes to lore they are still keeping everything quite underwraps and that is the weakness of this game without a doubt is that the story could be beefier with some cool character like main bad guys there are cool looking bosses not gona lie in the strikes they really look bad ass but they kind of don’t have a backstory or any reason why I should care about them other than loot.

It’s a very very good game but it can use a lot of work still and I do have a few complaints like the story and when u signing up for a strike there is an issue. I am with you with the milking as well if they start releasing pay DLC for like new embles or ships or skins it kind of defeats the purpose of the game as you are not earning it then I will stop supporting the game straight up nothing I hate more than that rubbish. If you going to have DLC make it about expanding the lore and the story add new planets location I will gladly pay for stuff like that.

I agree – Destiny plays it far too safe for my own liking… Looks great and all, and isn’t a bad game per se but lacks a little soul. And the story is poor.

Very odd that an Activision shooter is below 60fps. WTF?
The Last of Us has the option to switch to 30fps and holy fuck balls how crap is the game on that setting.
The aiming and camera panning takes a total dive.
Why is Destiny (a $5000000000000 trilion billion game) not 60fps?

This game in some way reminds me of Mass Effect. Guess its just the atmosphere of the game and setting? Space and unique characters? possibly. Looking forward to getting this game.

It certainly is, and it seems that their focus is really on end-game. Once you hit level 20, more play options are unlocked – like increased difficulty on story levels to more strikes and raids. No way, I’ll be ready for that level 26 raid though… 🙁

I’d totally go out and get this game at the moment… but then I couldn’t join any of you as I’d be on Xbox 360.

Seeing what competitions hold, failing that then what I can do with my budget to get a PS4 and possibly a new TV too (as HDMI on current one is dead).

I knew this game was all hype . . . just about every game now-a-days is. They make it about as short as they can without being like only 5 hours.. They work tirelessly on graphics and such but ignore the biggest things they need to work on . . .campaign size, end game content . .. variability, and exploration

Sure, but after you beat the game for people who have literally NO INTEREST in Deathmatch and just as I feared not a god damn thing to do except replay missions which I’ve played all of them on hard. The only cool thing at the end of the game for people who could not give two squirts of piss for the Crucible ifs the end game raids and the only way to play it you need 5 friends to do these raids with a ps4 or xbox1 which I’m a ps4 gamer and I only have 2 that have a ps4 so I guess I’m S.O.L.
Destiny is a complete disappointment imo. You know where you go early in the game where there are ??? Enemies? I went to them when I leveled and you know what I got for doing it? Jack shit! That’s what. WTF is the point? Is this a glitch? Is the loot system broke? Hey dont come over here just yet bc of the incredibly hard ??? Knights then you grind and level to finally go there and its just more enemies. The patrol missions are terrible. Hey kill enemies to collect this. Next mission we need these things and you do this by how?
You guessed it by killing some more enemies. Next mission you need to scan this area all the way on the other side of the map. Oh really something new? Cool! Wait… so all I did was walk the entire map & no special enemies & no special armor, weapons, or anything to scan this area & now to get back I need to walk all the way back? Shitty.
The story missions are fun but the story is completely non existent. The strikes are the most fun part of the game. Bungie needs to fix the loot system I was given within minutes 3 helmets and 2 guns and they were ALL the exact same helmet and rifle with exact same specs. The Warlock has free worst looking armor except the coat.

Every single helmet I’ve received or purchased has been the exact same crappy style as the last and the only thing that the Warlock gets to differentiate itself is the very tiny armband that’s only on 1 arm and very small and completely lackluster.

The Hunter and Titan class get a huge cape or banner with cool designs to show of Warlocks get a tiny metal band armband. Even the Legendary Warlock bands suck. They’re the gayest looking designs of the bunch and by gayest I mean lame.

The Hunter & Titan class get diversity in their armor early on Warlocks have to wait until you get Legendary by competing in the Crucible which I’ll never do so I guess I can’t get them. Destiny is not really for single players except the main story after that nothing to keep you coming back just as I had feared and just as the Forbes reviewer was afraid of as well.

He’s a single player gamer as well and for people who would rather take a claw hammer to the nuts than play another Deathmatch game I would say pass. If I can say something positive about Destiny is this. The main Story missions and strikes are awesome challenging and fun.
The reason this is, is because of the shooting being extremely solid it’s on point. Everything about it is perfect. The classes and they’re respective sub class specials are almost identical. For example the Warlock has Voidwalker which is dark energy used as grenades and your special.
Then at level 15 you get a new type of special power which literally brings you back as if u were starting from the beginning. If you want to switch to this new abilities you first have to level them up like you did Voidwalker. However as I leveled these new abilities up they were literally the exact same thing as Voidwalker except instead of a purple grenade or melee attack it’s yellow/orange like the sun. So it’s it really worth putting more time in to upgrade these “new” abilities when they’re the exact same powers as before except a different color. You decide.

Wasted time playing this crap. Considering how weak and soulless the attempt at telling a coherent story was, I am utterly disgusted with the marketing. Only four locations which are so repetitive in look and missions I am utterly convinced Bungie are overated. This is a sterile joyless lie and if you have not bought it yet , Don’t .

Al the negativity around this game. I don’t get it. The expectations towards the release of the game are so much higher then what they should be. As a new IP IMO Destiny does what it should do. And they will learn. They will use their time and money to get it right. For me it is already right. It looks nice, it feels nice and I spend most of my free time shooting people. What else is there to like 🙂

What is not great is that you need to find 5 more of your “friends” (hopefully none have jobs or families), and coordinate a time when you can all go play an 11 hour raid together…. or you can’t even participate in the “end game”.
