DICE details Battlefield 4 fixes

Battlefield 4 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 doesn’t look quite as good as it does on other platforms; most notable the PC where it looks like Real War Life: The Videogame. Or at least it would; if it actually worked properly. The PC version, you see, has been beset by bugs and crashes and all manner of other issue. Actually, so have the other versions. DICE is busy fixing then,

“Players on all formats have been experiencing game crashes and freezes while playing. We have logs of the most frequently occurring client crashes, and we are actively working to Obliterate the cause of these crashes in upcoming updates,” the developer said in a post on Battlelog.

DICE have actually been quite incredible with post-launch support; and have done 6 or so server side updates to fix the server crashes that have affected just about everybody playing.

As for the PC version that’s been crashing the most?

“We are working on a PC client patch at the moment and hope to release it soon. We will share the patch notes once we have the patch contents finalized. The main focus is to fix as many crashes as possible, starting with the issues affecting a large number of players,” DICE said.

Have you been having issues getting Battlefield 4’s multiplayer working properly?

Other than rubberbanding on mweb servers my BF4 so far has been really smooth, and oh so pretty!

The MWeb servers really are the worst at the moment. I get lag every now and then, but it’s especially bad when playing on the mweb servers. 😐

Yeah I really dunno why. Every other server is lag and issue free, but rubberband around on the mweb servers (with 10ms ping!). Odd.

If it was the 64 player servers its because the severs were setup on the wrong hardware

They are now 50 players only, and still same issue.

Quite right, the 64 player servers were put onto the R520 servers in error. Things go wrong in the heat of a launch. The Gameservers.com guys have transferred the instances last night onto the faster R210 servers, so the big servers should be behaving tonight (i.e. rubber banding should hopefully be a thing of the past). There’s been plenty of patches for the servers, so hopefully the disconnects problem should also have been taken care of by the DICE team. All the other smaller servers (40 and below) we are hosting (all BF4 servers in the region are hosted by us and Gameservers.com) seem to be behaving correctly. If anyone is having hassles, please let me know.

Yes this is true. Apart from the other crash issues we noticed on the 40 players servers that they seemed far more reliable. Thanks for working on this, am sure your users will keep you informed.

Yup, those 40 player and less servers are running on the 520’s as intended (they made for mass rollouts of smaller servers). We’re keeping a watch on this – we want the play experience to be good for players.

Yea, MWeb servers have been bad all the time in my experience. I tried them a number of times just to give them a chance after I heard they had fancy servers etc.but no, they rubbish. Other than MWeb I have not had issues on other SA servers or EU servers, they have all run well and so has the game for the most part. I had a few hours yesterday afternoon where I could not play due to the rubber banding (and have played 20 hours total) but that’s it really.

All the servers in South Africa are MWEB. They are gamerservers.com hosted in MWEB infrastructure, it was just a setup issues that has been resolved.

Problems are intermittent and honestly I didn’t experience any of the disconnects during the Beta so it may not be something they expected.

For me, the game is running allot better than “beta”. I have no complaints. Dice are doing what they can, they have already loaded a number of patches…so yes, its the nature of development on this scale. I don’t know of any game that has not had launch issues. For me, BF4 issues are minor.

The game was hardly playable in beta, they have made some great improvements. I am not a big fan of dice but the rate they are rolling out patches is really impressive compared to other studio’s.

“Back in the Cartridge days, releasing a buggy game was punishable with a Stomping by the company Brontosaurus” – Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw.

Why are bugs so easily allowed these days. Especially in AAA titles…. :/

Companies know that with internet everywhere software can be updated post release.
Games get released on a release date, not on ‘when it is bug free’ date.

Also, games are just so much bigger, more detailed, and have a much larger day 1 player base. It’s become harder and harder to iron out every bug before release, and with companies being under pressure to get the game out, they make a decision that looks a lot like “it’s ready for release, we may experience some bugs guys, so please be ready to nail them asap.”

      You are comparing a 300 kilobyte game to a 25 gigabyte game … that’s why …

A game that used the cartridge is over a million times smaller than any games these day’s.

Playing the PS3 version, I had 1 or 2 crashes, in the Single Player there are a number of hang-ups and texture issues (nothing critical through).

My biggest issue with BF4 is being unable to change my loadout when I’m not in an actual battle. I mean really, BF3 had this feature. Now we need to have battlelog app or website open on another device to make loadout changes, WTF!

Granted that is what I’m doing, but really when you buy a console it never said “Tablet Required” or “PC Required” for a convenient feature that’s been in previous BF games for ages.

Also try join a friend in a battle, “No commander Slots available”.
Not sure how competitive games are supposed to work without a party join feature.

I is a bit frustrating, but I’m fine with changing my loadout just before deploying the first time. My only major issue with the game is that I got about 80 % through the single player campaign, checked out some multiplayer and when I tried to continue SP, all progress was lost. It’s a short campaign but I really don’t want to go through it all again.

Strange thing for me is the CT MWEB servers seem to be the most unstable even though they have the lowest latency (3 – 10) bcos I stay in CT. JHB servers with 30 latency don’t seem to give as many issues.

But yes I’ve had a couple freezes/game crashes and even the infamous red screen if you have an ATI card.

I had about 1 crash of some sort for every two maps before I installed the beta AMD catalyst drivers. I haven’t had an issue since. Other than the mweb server lag despite my single digit pings.
On some international servers I have no issues on 300ms pings.

Only had 1 very minor issue on my PS3, got the screen going all fractal and weird on me when zoomed in like some of the old PC Nvidia cards did in the old days when your driver wasn’t up to date, other than that the little bit I was allowed to play was pretty good, no server hangups or anything… okay if I want to nitpick there were occasions when it said it was loading one map in MP and then loaded a different map to what it said…

People clearly don’t understand the problems inherent in trying to design a game that is meant to run on literally millions of possible hardware setups. How they can expect a flawless system from day one is beyond me. Any time you are involved in a software rollout you expect trouble, and frankly Dice handles the troubleshooting and patching far, far better than most other companies.

The most notable change from DICE this version has been the communication. They have in my humble opinion been keeping us all notified of planned changes or fixes. I hear the are even working on changes to the Domination mode to make it more compatible to eSports.
I am waiting to see fixes for CPU issues and crashed caused by audio diver compatibility. All in all they till have a long way to go, hopefully a small patch will be out in the next day or two.
