Dirt 4 teased by Codemasters

The Dirt franchise has been the long running king of rally in the gaming world. Dirt 3 was actually a rather solid racing title all round, with some interesting new events like the popular Gymkhana insanity. It looks like Codemasters is finally ready to reveal the next entry.Codemasters have been mum on details regarding a Dirt sequel for a long, long time. Yesterday, however, the studio’s official Twitter account posted a curious tweet, with a solitary “4” being sent out.

That was quickly followed up by another tweet, claiming that someone’s finger had just slipped by accident.

By now, we all know that there’s no such thing as an accident in this industry. That never, ever happens. Everything means something, which means Codemasters is probably ready to start talking about Dirt 4 again soon. Probably.

It’s odd that they would skip out on E3 and Gamescom and only start announcing things now, but I don’t think many fans care. I’m pretty excited for another Dirt title in the near future, and I can’t wait to see what Codemasters has in store this time.

  1. Oh Codemasters. If only you could convince me to support you again.
I’ve been looking for a new Racing game this entire week. Wow, I’m so surprised by how few they’ve become.

Wait it out until Project CARS releases. Grid was great a few years back but the engine used looks dated.

I still play the first GRID, often. I love it. The graphics don’t bother me much. But the mechanics of GRID 2 is so ridiculous that it ended up being the only game in my Steam library that I made a category for so I could hide it.
Project CARS has been pushed out to 2015 and I’m not quite sure how I feel about it yet. Though it does look pretty.

Played the early access beta at a friend’s place and must say the view where you sit in the car was awesome. Felt like the most realistic in car view yet.

I’ve only heard and read good things. So I really am intrigued by it. And considering that it doesn’t have monthly payments like rFactor and iRacing it’s the better option for me. RaceRoom is also brilliant, but the F2P with 1000 microtransactions ruins it.

They spell DiRT with a lower case i. They are emphasising an “I” through clever means. I in roman numerals is 1.
      4 – 1 = 3.

I have DiRT 3 lying on my Steam library, unplayed.
All I want at this stage is a new Underground. That game was excellent arcade fun. All the new NFS games are so embarrassingly terrible and no one seems to be going the route of what Underground was.

Dude, I’m totally with you on that! I would LOVE a new Underground game. Man, I loved that game! Spent so many days, let alone hours, playing it.

But yeah, the latest NFS games are truly terrible… Seriously – I haven’t enjoyed any of them since about the PS2 era.

Shift 2 is not bad actually. Except that it’s riddled with errors that make it crash. I think one of the big things that I hate about the new NFS games is the lack of a decent monetary system. Now they have speed points and kak like that.
Keep it simple. You earn cash (or credits) and you use it to buy and mod your cars. And give us low-end cars to start off with, not Porsches for first cars. We want our Silvia’s and 240sx’s.

I don’t know why EA hasn’t noticed how many people want this.
But if they’re going to screw it up like they did the new Most Wanted, then I’d rather go without a new Underground.

I’d really dig a new Underground. If you want Porsches first then we need a new NFS Porsche Unleashed/2000 (Do not play with a keyboard, you will have a bad time and so will your keyboard).

          • Sith JJ

            August 22, 2014 at 09:25

Dude. Porsche Unleashed remains one of my all time favourite racing games. I loved that game. Played it endlessly.
Speaking of playing with keyboards. I tried out Need For Speed World. Wow, was I disappointed. Something with such a good idea ends up feeling so patched together. They say it’s mostly made with keyboard play in mind….for a racing game…have they gone completely insane??
So I plugged in my Xbox controller, because it’s supported. Only you can’t change the mappings and the available mapping doesn’t make any sense at all.
So yes. New Underground or a new Porsche Unleashed type game.

            August 22, 2014 at 09:39

Yeah the good ol’ days of Electronic Arts! I remember spinning out in Porsche Unleashed, then spinning out again because FULL THROTTLE OR NOTHING on gravel/curb. If that game taught me anything it’s the ability to *tap tap tap tap* my way to full throttle.
Can’t wait for Project Cars though. Need a racing seat and decent wheel to go with my projector. MY BODY IS READY!

            August 22, 2014 at 11:20

My one friend still laughs at me when I tell him that tapping is the only way in games like those.
            But Project CARS, yess.

Codemasters just do a Need for speed Underground 3 styled game and you will win me back into the realm of racers. We have over enough simulation racers. Over enough arcade/simulation racers as well that “obey” the law. We need a racing game where we can do illegal racing in a safe environment (which is our living room or bedroom of course) If they can make fighting games where they kill people then surely an underground illegal racing game can work? damn…. so so sad.

Codemasters used to be a semi-sim developer with their RaceDriver series until they raped their reputation with GRID 2. So they have the potential to make an Underground-style game, I just don’t think they can pull it off.

Yeah GRID 2 was a sad sad racing game. I enjoy semi-sim racers, but I think we have over enough of the sim and semi-sim racers out there. We just need a decent arcade underground racer. A fun one. One we can just live the illegal racers life type of thing lol Would be great actually. I was thinking Codemaster cause like you say they have the potential to create one. I think they can pull it off. They just need to employ some people from the Need for speed underground games as well as some who worked on Most Wanted (The original one. Not the horrible recent one)

          I absolutely agree.
They just need a few peeps in there that know how to do it and maybe just one or two Underground fans to tell them how to do it right (or they could go onto any one of a million Underground forums and see for themselves).
The new trend that I’m hating is how they’ve taken out the money element in many racing games.
And on Most Wanted I agree. I like to pretend the new one never happened.
Next year Underground 2 will be ten years old.

YES Absolutely agree with the money element. They should revert back to money instead of credits or fan base type currency system. Experience point system can stay, but should be separated from a cash currency system. I still dont understand why the underground styled racer died out because it has seriously huge potential to truly make your car unique.

I don’t get it either man. I actually think I might install Most Wanted or Carbon tonight. This is seriously making me want to play one of those games. Underground two got an impressive graphics mod, but I’m a bit unsure whether I want to replace my Underground 2 memories with new ones.

            August 21, 2014 at 10:08

I love carbon because the atmosphere was great. Felt really like another world. There tons of mods out for underground 2 though. The graphics mod is the best. Not too keen on adding or replacing cars.

Ahh i just had an idea for an underground styled racer. Imagine you winning races and you have enough money to buy a kit for your car so you drive around in the open world looking at where the best priced shops are for kits (you have to drive through a living world during the day to shop for kits and parts) and use currency to get a panel shop fit your kit for a price with other options such as spraying colour etc etc or if you want to save money you can do it in your safe house/garage where fitting a kit becomes a kind of mini game to fit parts on. Even mechanical work where you have a mini-game in fitting a cold air intake. Through trying to fit it perfectly yourself you gain more experience points as a driver system as well as getting your car specs up (Aero dynamics etc) Id typed too much detail on this so hope you get the idea of what im trying to say lol

            August 21, 2014 at 10:10

I love the in-game mini-games. So that would pretty sell the game to me. I think you have an idea there dude.

The original Underground was best for me. Never got into second one, did not like the open world idea. Original Grid was great and NFS The Run was more fun than I would like to admit. Juiced was similar to Underground but sadly got too many things wrong.

Underground is also the only racing game that my wife loves and that says a lot for the appeal it had. She used to take photos of the TV screen with her drift high scores and send it to me so I could prepare for the challenge when I got home. Fond memories.
