Disney Infinity is going head to head with Skylanders

If ya can’t beat them, wait for them to leave a club and bonk them around the head with a steel pipe from behind. While picturing Mickey Mouse doing that to Spyro may be an unintentionally hilarious way to start Monday, it’s an idea that isn’t too far fetched either. Skylanders has made a ton of cash for Activision so far, and now, Disney is looking to get a piece of that action.

According to a report from Stitch Kingdom, a bit of PR is doing the rounds right now to get shops up to date on the project, as “a video produced for retailers which will be used to educate them on the product as well as familiarize them with the content”.

The project, formerly known as Toy Box, will use plastic figures and a “flat device” which will transport the company characters via USB and infrared into the console. Sound familiar? What makes this game special for Disney however, is that it will be the first time that characters from their universe of films, and the Pixar line of movies, interact with one another. The starter pack is reported to include the device reader and three tokens Monsters Inc.’s Sulley, Captain Jack Sparrow and Mr. Incredible.

And that’s just to begin with. More characters will obviously be on the way to siphon some cash from your pocket, including Mike Wazowski, Randall, Hector Barbossa, Davy Jones, Mrs. Incredible, Syndrome, Dash, Violet, Woody, Jack Skellington, Agent P, Rapunzel, Anna, Ice Queen, Sorcerer Mickey, Tow Mater and even more to follow.

Disney is also looking to use characters which weren’t created on a computer, as they’ll be tying in their upcoming Lone Ranger movie by inserting that hero into Infinity as well. And considering that the company now owns Star Wars, don’t be too surprised if you hear a certain asthmatic breathing coming from your console either.

Is it a shameless imitation of the Activision Skylanders product? Most likely, but it’s also one that could succeed regardless. Everyone loves Disney, and with a massive library of recognisable characters, parents could be adding even more plastic additions to their kids collections, in the near future.
