Dead-Space-3

Free to play games can go suck a lemon, because who needs titles such as that when you can still milk gamers for a few extra bucks after they’ve spent several hundred Randelas on your product? Dead Space 3 is one such game that is going to feature a few options for micro-transactions, from scavenging for items to obtaining better weapons. Still, at least the game has one other option that won’t cost you a laser-torched arm and a leg, and that’s extra gameplay modes for when you finish.

Speaking in a developer’s blog post that NeoGaf spotted, Dead Space 3 producer Steve Papoutsis says that alongside the actual game, a “top secret additional story” was also on the way. Papoutsis says that more information on this extra narrative will “be coming in a few weeks”, and that it may well be a “disturbing” piece of extra content.

Moving on, Papoutsis also detailed the four additional gameplay modes that would be on offer, once the core campaign had been finished. New Game gives players the standard opportunity to kick off a second playthrough with all their acquired gear, while Classic Mode ditches all the crafting for a more blueprint-centric experience that reminiscent of the very first Dead Space. Here’s the full list of deets;

There’s New Game+, which lets you start a new game with all your upgrades and arsenal intact.

Another mode is Pure Survival Mode. If you like survival horror and resource management, this is the mode for you. Enemies ONLY drop resources, and there’s no ammo, health, or weapon parts to be found. You’ll have to choose what to craft every time you see a bench. Upgrade? Med Pack? Plasma Core? Think fast – there’s a Waster right around the corner!

There’s Classic Mode, which is for the DS1 veterans out there. It’s single-player only, uses “classic” aiming, and there’s no crafting – all weapons have to be built from blueprints, a la the original game.

Finally, we have the aptly-named Hardcore Mode. Choose this mode, and you only get one life to live for the entire campaign. Make sure to wear a clean pair of boxers when you play…

Despite the fact that Dead Space 3 is moving on from horror to a more of an action-bend in this third instalment, I’m still keen to play the game. But it’s all this talk of micro-transactions that is leaving a sour taste in my mouth so far. Visceral knows how to craft a good game, and despite those questionable additions to the core formula, I still have faith in it. I just wish that EA had the same amount of faith, instead of poking their noses into the project so that they can ring out as many extra dollars as possible.

Dead Space 3 is out on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 next month. PC Gamers get the game at the same time, with super-duper awesome mouse and keyboard functionality added. You lucky bastards.
