Doom 4 to ship on multiple Blu-Rays

Doom4

Update: The original translation has now been updated at the source, apparently John Carmack didn’t say it would use more than 1 Blu-Ray disc but rather it would use more data on the Blu-Ray than they will ship on DVD’s for the PC. Which doesn’t exactly make sense but it does invalidate this story.

One of the most entertaining things to do for PS3 fans in this generation is to make fun of the Xbox 360’s limited disc space and to then point to their glorious Blu-Ray discs and remind everyone that they don’t have to get up off the couch to change discs, ever.

Well that may be a thing of the past with John Carmack stating this weekend that Doom 4 may require multiple Blu-Rays to handle the amount of textures that will be shipping with the super texture pack.

The videos are just using the normal game data. There is a decent chance we will fill more data than the PS3 and Blu-Ray DVDs for we ship on Doom 4, but we will have to see how much trouble it is maintaining two complete builds of the data. I would love to let the PC stream over the net when needed an extra detail, but the server and bandwidth that would take a significant commitment that I’m not sure we can make

The idea that the extra textures will need more than a single Blu-Ray and the fact that they even considered streaming that amount of data is mind boggling.

Either way this title would be a landmark title if it required more than 1 Blu-Ray disc and would also that you’re going to need a ton of discs if you’re planning on playing it on the Xbox 360.
