European sales – 5th April 2008

Nintendo DS

So very little has changed this week, GT5:P is still going strong, there is a suprising lack of PS3 and 360 titles in the charts this week and for the first time on this site we are going to be looking at the DS and PSP sales as well

Hardware

clip_image002 166,202 (+11%)  25,270,557
clip_image004 125,075 (+8%)     7,595,768
clip_image006 115,712 (-23%)     5,020,174
clip_image008   75,708 (-17%)     6,091,991
clip_image010   52,143 (-4%)      11,542,121

So the DS is easily the winner this week followed by it’s big brother the Wii, However the PS3 is closing fast and the 360 is falling behind. The PSP is bringing up the rear.

What is interesting however is that the 360 now only has a 1.02 million lead over the PS3, however at the current rate the PS3 won’t overtake the 360 for another 26 weeks.

When we look at the software charts we have a similar looking pattern

clip_image002[4] 708,790
clip_image004[4] 656,523
clip_image006[4] 614,052 (268k on GT5 alone)
clip_image008[4] 341,002
clip_image010[4] 102,488

I am pretty sure Microsoft are not happy at all with those software figures….

Mhmm…you are right, that at that rate, that gap won’t close for another 26 weeks. Just don’t forget the inevitable spike that will follow Metal Gear’s release in about 9 weeks time…

Yea its silly to say 26 weeks cos its not a static equation!
In one week the ps3 might sell 400k while the xbox sells 100k.

nice addition of the DS and PSP, i had no idea that so many PSPs have been sold.

Anyway, no question about a bigger spike for MGS4, and both the 360 and PS3 are going to spike for GTA4.

Yes I know we can’t compare directly, I was just doing the maths before someone else did 🙂

I do honestly wonder how well MGS is going to sell though, I doubt it will break any current records

Whats even more relevant to the whole process is the validity of the data. There is absolutely no way on God’s green earth that a meaningful sample representative of Europe and the rest of the world can be collated and verified in 2 days by 2 or 3 people working for a website.

It would be a bit like Lazy asking his favourite salespeople at his local BT Games , Incredible Connection and Musica to give him some sales data and extrapolating SA sales accordingly

I wish there was something better than VG. Where are the PS2 sales though?

[re=10943]boredhousewife[/re]: VGChartz is constantly updated with informative estimates and then corrected with valid factual data when it becomes available. If you check back they are rarely off target

[re=10944]Tan[/re]: I am not really checking PS2 stats but this week they were last on hardware and software

Nintendo shoots … and scores! Hardware and software sales make this generation a one horse race.

What i have seen on these sales charts and specially on games that are heavily multilayer . then the xbox outsell the
ps3 by a whole lot. Take rsv2 for example already about a million sold but the ps3 lag a long why back.

Where something like dmc have sold almost on par.

Will be interesting to see what happens with gta iv. My prediction is that a lot more will sell on the xbox purely because of the ease for the multi player.

I think in the end it will be best if Sony does take the lead, not a runaway lead like they had with the PS2, but a clear noticeable lead. Because that will give a clear indication of what gamers want( open network, free online gaming, no crappy,
overpriced proprietary storage solutions to name a few).
Something MS will hopefully take heed of and incorporate into the next console.

It is also the market perception that the PS3 is more powerfull. You get that here too, in the game shops. I of course change their perception or at least try to.

By the way the comment by Ri was me. I forgot to add the vaZA 🙂

[re=10950]LazySAGamer[/re]: I think their nos are a reasonable indication of sales trends , but statistically speaking I think their margin for error is significant

VG Charts numbers may not be spot on accurate, but they’re not bad. what should be pretty good is their general relative performance, ie the relative comparison between the different items, as they come off the same sample base.

Based on the nos there are a few conclusions that we can draw.
    1) The Wii fad is still going strong
    2) MS pricecut has been effective in territories where the brand had an existing presence , but there are large parts of Europe that do not support Xbox regardless of price
    3) BluRay victory seen a big turnaround in PS3 fortunes in NA
