Fallout 4 ships 12 million units, becomes third biggest UK launch of the year

I’m lost in the Wasteland, exploring every nook and cranny of Bethesda’s newest epic-scale open RPG. I’ve enjoyed very nearly every minute of it, with just a bit of resource management and base-building getting in the way of my entertainment. It’s quite likely that very, very many of you are enjoying it too.

Fallout 4 is selling exceptionally well, says Bethesda, who’re beating on their chests about the game’s retail performance. According to Bethesda, they’ve shipped 12 million copies of the game – valued at 750 Million US Dollars. It’s worth noting that that’s shipped and not sold through to customers, so we have no real idea how many people are playing the game.

“We’re extremely proud of Todd Howard, Game Director at Bethesda Game Studios, and his experienced team of developers for their talent and dedication in creating this extraordinary game,” said Bethesda Softworks president Vlatko Andonov. ” Fallout 4 is a masterpiece in game development and storytelling, providing fans hundreds of hours of fun as they explore and are challenged by this fascinating, beautifully crafted world.”

That’s a lot of people who are – presumably – enjoying one of the year’s most successful video game launches, coming in (in some regions, at least) only behind FIFA and Call of Duty. The silly, large plastic bracelet that makes up the bulk of the collector’s edition has made it so that the Pip Boy Edition of the game is” the fastest-selling collector’s edition of game in history at leading retailers”, the publisher says.

“A huge thanks to our fans that’ve made this all possible,” said game director Todd Howard. “After four years of development, it’s not complete until our fans get to play it and make it their own. We can’t wait to hear about their adventures.”

According to the guys at Super Data, 1.87 million copies were sold via download on PC and console in the first three days. It’s unclear if that’s included in the 12 million number sited above, but it is interesting to see a big shift towards physical copies for Fallout 4, presumably because of the huge appeal of the Pip Boy Editions. So much for PC gamers all waiting for games to go on sale before purchasing; with PC gamers accounting for two-thirds of all the downloads of the game in that period, they certainly weren’t waiting for any special deals before opening up their vaults.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to Wasteland for more wandering adventures.

Starting out on Fallout 4 is not a bad thing. I started on Fallout 3 and then New Vegas + expansions.

      Couple of pro tips.

1: Whenever you pick up a weapon with cool mods remod it with standard stuff. That way you get to keep the mod for somewhere else.
2:Cooking gives oil and Chemistry gives adesive.
3: trade routes help a butload.

Nope … if they can get to my power armour without getting disintegrated or filled up with lead then they deserve it. I mean REALLY deserve it. Hell I went to defend a base yesterday and wound up doing nothing cause too many damn turrets.

Dogmeat is great for a certain play-style. If you use the lone ranger perk Dogmeat is the only companion that the perk stays active with. Also he rocks … in the middle of a bloody feral ghoul pack and he decides to rip a teddy bear apart for fun.

The only reason I feel morally compelled to use him is I am a dog lover. I have had a lifetime affair with Dachshunds. Hey, That would be great, Instead of running around with a Alsatian, It would be totally hilarious if you ran around with a wiener dog.

Yep.This game is cool. Anyone done that loot run in a building that locks you in ? You get locked in and do some great detective work about the goings on during the attack. You end up picking up different samples of something and eventually use it to build yourself a jacked up armour mod based on the research that was been done there. That is insane attention to detail.

In my twenties I played Vampires: Masquerade from Friday night to Sunday morning, with my housemate. Trouble is, we admitted later we could not sleep, cause so many hours with that game and the eerie music meant going to room, shutting door and switching off light just did not seem like fun.

BUT my housemate (at the time) is a HUGE fan of horror genre and he felt the same, we just had the eerie on too long to just sleep easily.

In the horror and thriller, movies and games, I am a big girls blouse. Certainly.

The random bugs I can handle. But those save games…I verified my game files, modded it with a “no crash” mod and it still happens. 70% of the time I load a game it hangs on the loading screen…over it now.

Me: I play Mass Effect 1, on my Xbox One, Saturday MORNING, with baby awake. She ran around playing, I ran around in the game. It was awesome!!!!!!

Certain game I cannot play in front of her, at all, but Mass effect 1, other than the Krogan and Turian faces, who she laughed at, it seems ok. Witcher 3, never.

Indeed, yes. Stuffed Krogan. Man, I like that species. Super intelligent, just have differing view points.

I was very careful, turned the TV off if she ran in and I thought it was “violent” or something. BUT most of he start is just walking around and talking, so that was cool. She sat next to me for about 5 minutes, leaning on me, for the start. That was pretty cool 🙂

I am glad you enjoyed the game AND the show.

Slept over? Hmm. sounds GREAT. Nice treat for you guys!

I long for the day when the wife and I can take a break for a weekend (or even just a night) somewhere, leave kid with Ouma and Oupa. BUT, by then wife will want another one, so……..

Let me start this mini-rant with “I’m enjoying it so far… but this is a game that also annoys me..”

    a) I am finding the game a little soulless in its portrayal of a post-apocalyptic world and the interactions between my character and NPCs. If I compare it to the recent Mad Max game, I honestly think that Mad Max captured a world “gone off the rails” better than Fallout 4.

    b) Bethesda tends to get a free pass on delivering buggy games. My character’s left arm remains stuck under his body armour. I’ve tried everything possible to free his arm, but it always goes underneath his chest armour.

    c) I’m enjoying the settlement building more than killing the same raiders and super mutants over and over.. and over again.

    d) The world is Skyrim version 2 (with a few rusted cars thrown in) – and I honestly can’t see why this wasn’t released last gen.

    e) I would join the brotherhood of steel in real life!

    f) The 50s music is amazing! One song in particular is stuck in my head “Grandma plays the numbers)

Overall, it’s a pity I’m not reviewing this game, because it would barely get a 7 from me…. You can’t ignore the obvious flaws and while the game is decent with its xbox 360/PS3 graphics…. the terribly lame story, the frequent fetch & “kill that” missions, flaws, bugs, glitches, etc. stand out like a sore thumb.

Yeah, Dogmeat tends to get in my way all the time. And I have had serious slow down on rare occasions but I put that down to playing COD and then jumping straight into Fallout 4. There is frame lag but it has been minimal. I agree, the game lacks polish. But I tend to ignore it given the fact that I have 400 hours of gameplay to look forward to. Value for money.

      Counter arguments.

      a) Mad max was all sand and crazy people. Water was the main issue there so things are different to a nuclear apocalypse. Also Australia.

b)Have not found many bugs yet but I agree

c)That is choice in game-play and is rather satisfying since most open world games don’t give it to you. They stick to the Main quest side quest thing.

      d) The sheer amount of scripted events and building the world by hand. Skyrim had a design around empty space. Fallout has a design in filling that up with as much as possible. However the boarded up houses annoy me.

      e) Minute man for life!

      f) Crawl out though the fallout is my personal stuck in head song atm. 😛

Too many people get hyped for games that won’t really play as it is not their type of game. So far I have enjoyed every second of it and is one of the few games in recent years that made me lose track of times.

As for the graphics. There are literally hundreds of mods that already make it shine.

BUT: Are you, on the whole, enjoying your time with it? That, for me, is the important metric. Is it, in this time and place, fun for you? OR do the bugs and annoyances detract too much?

Seems to be, for now, you are enjoying it. I must admit to being a little glad I did not buy it, not just because my cheque account looks like someone bought crap loads of Christmat gifts. I will wait.
