Yesterday was a holiday, which means that today is conveniently sandwiched between two working days. The smart people (and Darryn) have taken today off to do things other than work, while the rest of us sit here questioning our decision-making skills.
Presuming you fall in to the latter category, do you regret your decision not to take today off? Are you sitting in an office of ghosts?
What would you rather be doing than sitting at your desk, twiddling your thumbs while absolutely nothing happens around you? I have Ni No Kuni sitting on my PS3 waiting for me to play it – and if I weren’t here, sitting at my desk smashing my keyboard with my face, that’s what I’d be doing.
And lastly, if you’re one of those people who has taken today off…don’t brag, ya jerks. Unrelated, it is Darryn’s birthday today which is why he’s out of the office, prancing about Nelson Mandela Bay in his Mankini.

Reaper “indoctrination” is an insidious means of corrupting organic minds, “reprogramming” the brain through physical and psychological conditioning using electromagnetic fields, infrasonic and ultrasonic noise, and other subliminal methods. The Reaper’s resulting control over the limbic system leaves the victim highly susceptible to its suggestions.

Time test unpopularity
A business is a place that needs product or services to make money. easy right? The last two weeks has been not the easiest of times in that regard. Production falls in factories around the country, but the staff want the same salary at the end of the month. That is fine and dandy, all the public holidays are legal and what not. What gets my goat is driving to work today and seeing how many business;s in the industrial parks are just not open at all or on skeleton staff.
My wife asked if I will be taking leave: I told her I would not sign others leave forms. And you know who is at work today? All the movers and shakers (and senior staff), the people that make things happen. The ones going to get promoted, not because they are here today, but because of overall effort and caring. Some (not even the majority, but a good portion) of the staff not here are always the first to complain at higher pay, more days off “unfair” working conditions.
Some estimates put R1.2 billion out of our economy today alone.

I’m not sure about the promoted part.
Depends on the company but my experience is that people who make the top brass think they do all the work instead of actually doing the work are the ones that get the promotions.
Brady miaau
May 2, 2014 at 12:05
in big companies, sure. But our firm is mid sized, so I like to believe the right people are put in the right place.
Alien Emperor Trevor
May 2, 2014 at 11:03
That’s right, dangle that carrot. Make the dream seem attainable for everyone if they just put that extra bit of effort in, only… it’s not. And, of course, when it doesn’t materialise it’s obviously all their fault. Very clever.
When my company was still private I happily worked over days like this & put in the extra time because I got something out of it. Then a corporate buy-out happens & what happens when I do that? I get a below inflationary increases, told I should be grateful to have a job & all incentives dry up. Your dream does not apply everywhere.
Kensei Seraph
May 2, 2014 at 11:06
You are obviously not being seen to work hard enough.
If you work hard and nobody notices you working hard you get nothing, but if you do nothing and everybody sees you working hard then you would have gotten that increase you don’t deserve.
Maybe acting classes would help.

It’s actually really funny you should mention that. The big boss usually gets to work around 6:30, and when he’s there all the sales reps would be there around that time too. When he’s not there they only arrive around 8. Without fail. It’s an on-going joke on our side of the business.
HvR - THE Average GAmer

At my first job there was a product launch so the company big heads decide to take the whole “team” out to celebrate:
Sales team who will sell the product.
Manufacturing team who will make the product (and 3 months behind schedule).
Company lawyers.
The CA’s.
Product champion, no F*&(king idea what the hell he did.
The IT guys.
And of course the whole company Exco.
NOT INVITED. The team of 4 engineers who actually design, implemented, made it work AND had to do all the manufacturing setup work. Worked Saturdays for 2 months, couldn’t take year end leave to meet the ridiculous deadline.
Alien Emperor Trevor
May 2, 2014 at 11:40
lol. This shit happens so often. We did a big rush project out in the Karoo, project manager worked his ass off to make the whole thing happen under budget & on time. Had a big thing on site with local gov officials, press, etc. Some big nob flies in from the US & takes credit for the whole thing. Didn’t even acknowledge the project manager, who had never even heard of or spoken to this guy before.

Unfortunately this is more the norm that the exception in South Africa.
The problem is not the free lunch but that is the typical company mindset.
Sales guys get sales bonuses, CA’s get company performance bonuses etc etc and the rest is stuck with “inflation related” increases. The guys that are effectively the company IP gets fed up and leave (usually after a VC buy out) and the whole house of cards goes tumbling down.

May 2, 2014 at 12:40
Wow, so I am the bad guy here?
Hmm, I might just be. Or naive. Trouble is I see the companies bottom line, part of me is paid to do so.
but yes, private / public company thing makes a big difference. When I still worked for “rob me blind corp”, the guys who did the talking got the big bucks, not the guys who did the work.
Alien Emperor Trevor
May 2, 2014 at 17:35

I think the cluster of public holidays is the real problem. companies should actually be grateful for employees taking leave this week – with so few days of actual work, employees get the full week off for only 3 leave days. This means they /hopefully/ return more rested and ready to work. the on-again-off-again approach to work isn’t great for productivity either.
Brady miaau
May 2, 2014 at 12:03
The problem here is that they all want leave at the same time, not staggered, so the few must then do the job of the many, cause factories must produce.

Brian Murphy
May 2, 2014 at 21:07
Workers’ Day is a national public holiday in South Africa and since 1994, it has been celebrated on 1 May of each year. It has its origins within the historical struggles of workers and their trade unions internationally for solidarity between working people in their struggles to win fair employment standards and more importantly, to establish a culture of human and worker rights and to ensure that these are enshrined in international law and the national law of those countries aligned to the International Labour Organisation. In pre-1994 South Africa, the demand for the annual observance of the day as a public holiday became a rallying point for workers and their trade unions and was one of a number of annually significant days to symbolise and mobilise resistance to the Apartheid government and its racial policies.
