Final Fantasy IV arrives on Steam

Final Fantasy IV has been around since way back in 1991. it’s gone through loads of re-releases since then, and even had its very own remake. All of those versions have been on everything from the PlayStation 1 through to the Nintendo DS and even iOS. Absent from all of that though was a PC version. That’s just changed, as the game has finally arrived on Steam.

If you’ve somehow missed any of the millions of various versions of the game due to not owning a console (ever), you can finally play it on your Master Race Rig. Here’s what you can expect (via Steam):

    • Fully voiced, dramatic cut-scenes
    • Deep, emotionally charged character development
    • All-new system for charting dungeons and uncovering the secrets within
    • Inspiring score accessible at anytime from the built-in Jukebox

The trailer on the page isn’t exactly new. It’s the very same opening sequence used on the remade DS version which is now 7 years old. Still, it gives an indication as to what you can expect should you pick up the game on Steam, as it is a port of the remake – optimised for PC.

FINAL FANTASY IV makes its debut on PC!

As the first game in the series to feature the innovative Active Time Battle system, FINAL FANTASY IV stands as an iconic milestone in FINAL FANTASY history. Lose yourself in this timeless tale of heroes, betrayal, love and redemption—now optimized for PC!

I love the Final Fantasy series. I’ve played all the old school ones – Final Fantasy I all the way through to Final Fantasy IX. I’ve played IV twice actually. I originally played the DS remake and then The After Years collection for PSP (just earlier this year in fact).

It’s one of my favourites. You take the role of Cecil, a Dark Knight serving the King of Baron. Cecil feels incredibly guilty after being ordered to attack the city of Mysidia, stealing their Water Crystal in the process. He questions the motives of the king, something which strips him of his rank. It’s the beginning of an awesome journey with memorable characters. If you’re a Final Fantasy fan and haven’t played the game yet, I would highly recommend it.

It will cost your wallet $15.99. It’s a tad steep for a game that is this old, but it’s not a bad price considering you’ll get around 15-25 hours of gameplay (depending on how much you wish to explore and grind).

I must question their choice to include this particular version of the game though. The After Years Collection might not be a 3D remake like the DS edition, but it has a bunch of extra content. It would have provided far more value for money.

  1. I always wanted to play the FF titles but 7 years later for $15? Then again, December specials are around the corner.

Keep in mind that even though it’s a remake, story and some mechanics might seem a tad old school. You should maybe play them in order following IV. There are no proper remakes of V and VI though, but they are available on iOS as far as I know. VI is still one of my all time faves to this day 🙂

I quite enjoyed the remake. If they’ve ported it correctly, should be awesome 🙂

I saw earlier that XIII is coming to Steam soon as well. I’m guessing it’s the best FF game because Rince just can’t stop talking about Pink Hair Boy. Or Girl, it’s difficult to tell.
