Final Fantasy XIV launches, bans YouTube

D-Day for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has arrived. To celebrate the launch of the MMO, Square Enix has released a launch trailer, but also put some strange restrictions on materials usage.

Okay, so here is the launch trailer:

Yeah, it looks pretty good – very Final Fantasy, just played in MMO form. Well done. Now for the bad news.

Square Enix put up their Material Usage License which went into effect yesterday. Here are some of the guidelines:
The video must not require a paid membership for viewing
You may not monetize your video via the YouTube partner program or any similar programs on other video sharing sites.
When showing gameplay, you may not replace the FFXIV music with third party music
You may not play FFXIV music alone (i.e., without accompanying gameplay footage), or with third party materials
So, Square Enix doesn’t want the free publicity that comes with Let’s Play videos on YouTube? They don’t want their game to be used in making great (or even average) AMVs (Anime Music Videos, for the uninitiated)? I understand that companies are worried about copyright, but people love these types of videos. FFXIV is already going to be making plenty of moolah off of subscription fees, why not let subscribers make a bit of that cash back by making let’s play videos?

Also, plenty of people like to watch Let’s Play videos before deciding on a game – that’s how I’ve discovered some real gems such as Don’t Starve. Seems like Square Enix is just planning on riding the coattails of the Final Fantasy franchise to get new players. I like the MMO, but it seems they are already making too many stupid decisions.

Bad move Square Enix, bad move!

Many companies are doing this, sad as LP’s are an excellent way to generate hype, unless the game sucks

To clarify: they have restricted users from making videos for profit, that’s all. You can post movies, just don’t make a business of it by asking for donations.

Not entirely true. You can post videos, but they can’t have any music in the background at all but what’s in the game. You can’t do machinima/AMVs because that would be splitting the video from the music, and that’s not allowed. It’s dumb as rocks.

The game is a generic MMO, I got a beta key and couldn’t stay interested for longer than 2 hours. If you played WoW, GW2, Everquest, LOTRO, Star Wars TOR then you have played the Final Fantasy MMO just with a new skin.

Meh, a failed remake of a failed game! Even the creator cried like a baby at the launch knowing it sucked!

three months later ffxiv arr is actually taking a good number of WoW players from Blizz. This game is amazing and even if you rush to 50 there is a lot to do (if you have even a bit of an imagination).
