First party games are “critical” for the launch of the Xbox Scorpio

Critical-Scorpio

Sony has had a killer year so far. Horizon: Zero Dawn, Yakuza 0 and Gravity Rush 2 have been sterling examples of first-party exclusives done right. And then there’s Microsoft, whose big exclusive in the first quarter of the year has been…Halo Wars 2. Team green has been receiving a bit of flak lately for the fact that it’s hard to justify owning one of its consoles for just the exclusives.

It’s not that Xbox doesn’t have them, but rather that there seems to be very little direction present for where the brand is going with the few remaining first-party games that it has in its arsenal. You can’t maintain the strength of that brand on Halo, Gears and Forza alone, while cancelling games such as Fable Legends and Scalebound doesn’t help in the ling run either.

Microsoft needs to kick off their E3 presence with a big bang this year if they want to keep the fans invested. With the Xbox Scorpio, they might have the right platform to do so as they peddle out a console that has enough hardware to give anyone a technolust boner. Hardware that will have some pretty decent software to give you some stiffware according to Xboss Phil Spencer via VG247.

Quizzed on Twitter on whether or not the Scorpio will have a launch library, Spencer had the following to tweet:

Dammit Phil, this collaboration between us was meant to be a secret!

I liked last year’s approach to E3 from Microsoft. New games were shown off, but these games that were scheduled for release in the coming months, not years. 2016 gave us exclusives such as Forza Horizon 3, Dead Rising 3 and Gears of War 4. Good games overall. This year needs to be a message methinks. One that really drives home the idea of 4K gaming and face-melting visuals. I still think the Xbox Scorpio is essentially a next-gen console that is conveniently backwards-compatible, but Xbox doesn’t see it that way.

Anyway, expect beans to be scattered everywhere in the June 11 Xbox press conference. That livestream for you people who won’t be sucking smog fumes in Los Angeles, kicks off at 2pm PDT/5pm EDT/11pm UK/12am CAT.

  1. Lesson learned from Scalebound and Fable legends – Don’t announce games too early…. They’ve been working on Scorpio for a while now and they will have a couple of face melting surprises at E3 1P wise! Also doesn’t seem like parity would be an issue with Scorpio’s automatic upscaling(Boost mode) so almost all 3rd Party games would look and play better on Scorpio as well! Open that Pre-Order option already dammit!!

They better bring the heat or there will be little reason to buy a Scorpio, Sony is absolutely killing it with the games (most important) part. They have a ton of games, pretty much every genre is covered and a lot of them are very good and most importantly for Sony, they’reexcluaives, so you cant play then anywhere else.

The way I see it, Microsoft has “lost” this generation, purely because Sony just killed it. Unless you wanna play GoW, Halo or Forza, you HAVE to buy a PS4…Add the fact that in SA, most people migrated to the PS4, means that online communities are better, your friends are most likely to have one
