First sales charts of the new year

So the first worldwide (minus Japan) sales charts are in and it looks like an exciting year ahead of us.

Straight to the hardware sales

1. Wii   – 335,377
2. PS3 – 194,494
3. 360 – 193,343

So the PS3 has overtaken the 360 (just) and the Wii is easily the clear leader but once again it comes down to the all important software sales.

1. Wii  – 1,706,229
2. 360 – 1,435,350
3. PS3 –    765,403

So the Wii is easily dominating in both areas however Sony needs to do something about those software sales as that is where they make the money.

I would say Microsoft are actually happy with this because they still have that opportunity for a huge price cut (as does Nintendo), it’s more of a when than an if now as well.

Also don’t forget the PS3 strong Japanese sales have not been counted yet so the PS3’s lead is greater than it looks above, however I doubt it will change the rankings in any way.

once again what about the money made. Each PS3 game is R600 or more, xbox 360 games are 250 up… so u can easely say that MS made the same money as sony for every 2 games they sold…

How does Wii keep selling so many software titles, where are the titles that they are buying??? In SA there are about 10 titles at most that I have seen in the stores. Something smells funny 😐 Unless people like to buy backups just in case they break a disc or something?

We’ve got the shitty end of the stick here as far as Wii games go – overseas all titles are readily available. I reckon Galaxy is still responsible for most of those numbers – it’s the first game that really excells on the Wii so that has filtered through to all the buyers who are less inclined to just go out and buy any game – the very casual gamer.

Bundled software distorts the picture – to get a truer view one should deduct the Wii Play and Sports numbers (about 500,000) from the Wii, as well as probably the bulk of Motorstorm numbers from the PS3, and most of the Forza 2 and Marvel numbers from the 360.

@Evilredzombie, no it doesn’t work like that. The loyalty fees that Microsoft and Sony charge are pretty much standard. Microsoft made a lot more money than Sony on game sales.

@JimBob I agree, if you look at the values Wii Sports has been sold 335,377 times. But you can’t buy this title without a Wii so it does distort the values, and if you remove those values from the software sales, XBOX aint that far behind the Wii, we would need to remove the bundled games from the xbox though to get a true reflection however since there are more bundles available with the XBOX it aint as easy to see.

…Hey, Lazy, you looking at those hardware figures? Remember also that you’re the same man who kept telling me “I don’t think Japan really matters that much anymore”, but with the race being this tight, we’ll see how insignificant Japan really is 😀 .

Oh, also, remember I said 2008 = PS3? I may be proven right.

Lastly, as per software sales, if one looks at the install base to software sold, Microsoft has, what 18 million consoles in the wild and they sold 1,4 million games. Sony has, what 8/9 million consoles in the wild and sold 750, 000 games? Ratio for install base to software sold looks pretty similar to me…

@Pillsbury, well Japan might now contain some signficance 😉

Oh and the software attachment rates for the 360 far outweigh the PS3. 6.9 per console on the 360 compared to around 2-3 for the PS3 if memory serves me correct,

I dont think the bundled software counts towards the SW sales. However i think wii Play which comes with a controller does count towards SW sales which does inflate it a bit.

Wii Sports is defintely counted in the charts (it’s always there at number 1 or thereabouts), so I’m sure it is included in the final software sales numbers.

Still, Mario is selling well (and deserves it) and is helping those numbers. Perhaps most telling is that the first third-party Wii game (GH3) in the charts comes in at #31. Nintendo’s first-party software sells well, but third-parties are still struggling on the Wii. Even on the PS3’s small installed base, you can see some pretty good numbers for Assassin’s Creed and CoD4.

European hardware figures slightly skewed by the fact that Spain traditionally exchanges gifts on Eve of Epiphany (5 Jan) so these figures include Spanish holiday sales (46000 PS3’s sold !!)
