Future GTA games could be sci-fi if Rockstar can find a good reason

Red Dredd Redemption

Captain’s Log, star date 23450128. After a routine trip to planet Sexulon for some R and R, I then instructed my crew to fire several photon torpedos at the leisure hive where I had formed the beast with three backs with those skanky green-skins. The resukt was a satisfying explosion that allowed me to pick up the credits that I had spent there, before a three-star response from the Republican Space Rangers descended on me. Escaping from a barrage of lasers and thinly-veiled homosexual threats from the space rangers, I then set a course for oh hang on my damn cousin is calling me so that I can go space-bowling with him…

Does that sound far-fetched? Yes, yes it does, but don’t discount the fact that future GTA games could eventually take a more science fiction tone. Albeit only if Rockstar sees a solid justification to do so. Speaking to French site Ecrans via VG247 a while back, Rockstar head honcho Dan Houser responded to an idea about going into the far future with the GTA franchise. “We will do it the very second we have an idea,” Houser said. One of our strengths is the consistency of the game world. We’re not necessarily the best writers in the world, but we know how to write a video game.”

Rockstar has strayed from the modern day into different time periods before, most notably in that game you may have heard of a few years ago, Red Dead Redemption. “When we decided to make a Western, it was because we knew we had something to say,” Houser said.

We have no interest in going into science fiction for the sake of flying cars and laser guns. The best science fiction stories are those that speak about the human condition. So while this idea is very tempting and, by definition, anything’s possible in a videogame, we lack the essential thing for the moment: a good reason.

I’ve got to agree with Houser here, as making a GTA game set in the far future would be a cosmetic effort at the end of the day. Yes, it would be damn cool to shoot lasers instead of bullets, or take off in a flying car instead of one that was bound to the laws of gravity, but what would it really add to the overall experience then. And besides, Saints Row already has that covered in their third game, thanks to some of the futuristic vehicles and weaponry available in that game.

Note to self: Mod Saints Row 3 to make the penetrator use light-saber sound effects.
