Here’s everything you might have missed from EA’s E3 conference

Ea at e32017

I spent Saturday night out at dinner, which meant that I wasn’t chained to my desk as usual. EA had their usual odd approach to press conferences, complete with YouTubers and influencers presenting games and getting a bit tripped up on a live stream. But that’s okay because there were still some really cool announcements to come out of the showcase. We covered it live, but in case you were actually busy on Saturday night, here’s what you might have missed.

Madden is getting a single-player story campaign

I think 2K set the bar with this one, but EA is poised to go above and beyond. They added The Journey to FIFA last year, and this year they’re adding “Longshot” to Madden. Players will work their way up through the ranks of college football all the way to the big leagues. This also means that college ball is back in the game for the first time since 2013 when EA cancelled in NCAA football game. Here’s a trailer showing more.

Need for Speed Payback is cinematic racing at its best

If you’re a racing game fan, you might generally move between Xbox or PlayStation’s flagship franchise. But EA’s Need for Speed has always offered something different, and this year that something different looks really great. Here’s a bit more detail about the game:

The current generation racer is launching in November, bringing players to a brand new city for you to tear up the streets with. Ventura Bay is described as sprawling, varied city, with dense streets for high-octane racing to scenic harbours and high canyons for you to test your handbrake skills. The open-world structure is being retained once again, with players free to explore the space at their leisure and hunt out events.

And here is a trailer for your viewing pleasure:

FIFA 18 will feature co-op in The Journey mode

The Journey is the single-player story mode for FIFA, available for all current generation players (Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game simply can’t run it). Just like the main game, The Journey features Cristiano Ronaldo based on a ton of data captured during a training session. But now, it also includes some co-op, too.

A Way Out is a story-driven co-op game from the makers of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

Ever wanted to play a co-op story-driven game with a friend without having weird drop in/drop out moments or just generally a lack of connection with your characters? A Way Out is promising just that. I was sold just watching this reveal trailer:

It’s even more dynamic than I thought, though. Whether you play couch co-op or online, the experience allows players to see that the other is up to in beautiful visuals and intriguing split screens. I’m really curious to see how this all works, and will probably mean I end up killing my other half as I try to go stealthy and he tries to just punch his way through the game.

Bioware’s new IP is called Anthem

Bioware just makes Dragon Age and Mass Effect games, right? Wrong. They have a new IP for us, and it’s called Anthem. While more details were revealed at the next press conference, EA’s showcase gave us this lovely, wall-centric teaser trailer:

In Mother Russia, Battlefield 1 rides you

Looking for more Battlefield 1 news? Of course you’re getting it. In The Name of the Tsar is the most extensive Battlefield expansion thus far, and here you can see a bit more about the Eastern Front.

NBA Live 18 also has a story mode

This one is called, um, The One and lets you become a legend in the league and the streets. Or something. Most NBA fans have gravitated to 2K’s franchise for the past few years, but EA is looking to win back players. Here is their trailer, but we shall see if they’re successful.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 features a full single-player campaign

When Battlefront released, people wanted an offline story mode – it was one of the biggest gripes/requests. Battlefront 2 is delivering on just that as it tells a Star Wars story that bridges the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Also, like Titanfall 2, all players will get all maps for free. Winning! Here’s the fancy gameplay trailer:

And that’s pretty much what you missed from EA’s press conference. You know, except for some cringe-worthy moments. But don’t worry, I found a video compilation of that for you, too.

I can’t believe I wasted my time watching this. Sports games are the same every year, adding a story where you just play for different teams is hardly interesting – I’m probably being bias because I have no interest in sports games – but still, screw you EA Sprots! Where is KOTOR 3?

Nothing that makes me think making bad decisions by preordering is a good idea.

Another weaksauce/”Phone home” conference from EA… You’d think I would learn my lesson and not bother wasting my time watching their conferences. The Microsoft one was marginally better, and I’ll admit the Boney X looks interesting (stupid fucking name and all), but not interesting enough to get my money on Day one.

From both conferences, I think the only thing that got me excited was the Anthem trailer during the MS conference.

    Stupid Bioware… Bah!
