THE LEGEND OF KORRA

Hands down, one of the best cartoons of last year was the sequel series to Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra. I loved the show, and while it wasn’t completely perfect, it hit a massive amount of high notes in the process. Book two is on the way, and here’s what it looks like so far.

I’m liking the idea behind the second series in this video from IGN. The spiritual aspect of Avatar has always served the show as a subtle aspect, but going deeper into that realm opens up a whole new world of stories for the show. And it doesn’t hurt to have animation which looks absolutely fantastic as well.

Book two airs 13 new episodes sometime in 2013, but no idea as to the exact date. What we do know though, is that of May 2013, Books 3 and 4 have also been prepared. Now that’s sequel-bending.

  1. I came late to the Avatar party.

My cousin had been raving on about the DVDs he bought in the states, and just for a laugh, I asked him to drop them off by me – the next time he was in Cape Town (This was still years before the DVDs would officially drop in South Africa, mind you). After stalling for what could have been a month or two, I finally popped the first one in the DVD player, and the missus and I literally finished the first two books in one marathon sitting. Soon thereafter we started with the last one.

It was a cartoon series that blew our minds. Expertly told, brilliant comedic moments, and it even threw in an occasional bitter-sweet incident.

Therefore last year, we gladly downloaded the first book of Legend of Korra. It was different, but it still felt like an Avatar cartoon. We were in love, and then it… ended… and now we’re waiting (first for the DVD set to be released in Africa, and for the next book to start in the states).

(PS: I still feel anger in my heart for that abortion M. Night Shyamalan cooked up… what a damn hack that guy is)

Sniff! He molested my inner child with that atrocious movie, and that left me all bile-filled and cynical.

the movie was not all bad. I mean, I felt genuine relief when the end credits rolled. Also that not a single thing was memorable, so easy to erase.

Best in 2012 it may have been, but not a patch on the first series. I like Aang, I connected with the characters. I could not get into this.

Perhaps it is because it is different and I still wanted more of the same. I will try later again.

The missus and I loved the first series, ate it up.
