India doesn't have the Wii yet?

I saw a story this morning about the first Wii game to be officially distributed in India is Alone in the Dark… Which raises the point that the Nintendo Wii itself has not been released in India.

So if Nintendo don’t feel that India is a good enough candidate for the CHEAPEST next gen console in the world then we just have to ask what on earth Microsoft was thinking when they launched Xbox Live in India before us….

We have over 65000 consoles in circulation and a dedicated and large360 Live community… yet they decided to release it in India first where it bombed entirely.

    India has more broadband users than SA and a better broadband setup.

    India, a seamlessly poor nation but they even get Xbox live support, to hell with that, they might as well give Iraq Xbox live too.

    But American people just think that South Africa is a place were people have pet lions and think that animals freely walk the streets. ON this one gaming sight I say some comments about SA and some dudes over there didn’t even know that we had games here.

    They just think its not worth the gamble, they probably will get more money out of our Country South Africa than India.

    I have been to India and it unfairly gets the same generalisation treatment as South Africa. There are a lot of poor people but there are huge amounts of rich people. It is an one of the IT hubs of the world and Indians are renowned worldwide for their IT knowledge. You must remember that a small percentage of the Indian population reflects a huge amount of people in relation to the SA population.

    Funnily enough I saw a lot of Wii’s there in March 2007.

    @David:
    That is a very unfair generalization. We’ve got some extremely wealthy (and talented) individuals in the country (quite a few on the Fortune / Forbes lists) and the majority of the middle class is quite well off, with the IT and Telecom sectors booming, sending pay packets rising to heights you wouldn’t believe.

    As far as our broadband scenario goes, the going rate for an unlimited / uncapped 512k line stands at around $24-$30 USD per month, which is still quite far away from the US , and especially UK’s, broadband standards, but I believe that one of the primary reasons that the console (and LIVE, consequently) was launched officially in the country is because of the growing demand for gaming in the 13-30 age bracket, especially considering the disposable incomes.

    With PC, PS2 and the GBA/DS doing extremely well in the country, the Xbox was originally slotted for release in the country a long while back, but they decided to go with the Xbox 360 because their market surveys were done at a time when the Xbox 360 was already well into development and almost close to its global unveiling.

    The weird part, as I said, is the fact that Nintendo almost doesn’t seem to care that its losing out on a huge chunk of sales, even as the PS2, the PS3 and the Xbox 360 fight over each other for little pieces of plastic with a name and an expiry date on them.

    And knowing the Japanese way of conducting business (which I’d describe as weird and truly scary), its not just Nintendo that has a problem – almost all Japanese publishers seem to have cold feet. With the result that a lot of publishers including Capcom, Namco Bandai, Konami, etc. don’t really co-operate with the local distributors for bringing their games out here, forcing us to order most of their titles from Play-Asia. In fact, with more and more local distributors not getting enough of a price rebate (considering the Purchasing Power Parity of the average Indian consumer) Xbox 360 and PS3 owners don’t even have access to Ubisoft titles in the country, forcing them to look for imports because the games get imported for way more than the US RRPs.

    Incidentally, I should mention at this point that India is practically the cheapest place in the entire world to get brand-new Xbox 360 PAL titles – with many of them retailing for around $42 USD, as compared to the $59.99 they retail for in the US, or worse, ₤59.99 in the UK. On a side-note though, the consoles are bloody expensive as hell – $430 USD for the Core, $620 USD for the Pro and $780 USD for the Elite, so yeah, we’re screwed that way there… 😛

    So, don’t be too sure about how much money Microsoft is making off India. After all, the last I checked, they weren’t exactly running a charity. Although, some wish they did…

    @Bokka:
    Never said the Wii wasn’t available in India. 😉 There’s great demand for the Wii here as there is worldwide, it’s just not available here officially. You can get one at any store here for around $280 USD.

    @Lazy:
    Wow, Xbox SA releases figures for region sales, or is it some other source? The last I heard, Microsoft refuses to release regional sales figures for their hardware OR software, which annoys us no end. 😀 That and the systematic late arrival (or no-shows) of review copies. And the non-existence of debug units…. Yup! Ain’t life grand?
