Is Dead Space 3 actually scary?

Just before the weekend, the internet took a quote made by EA Games’ marketing boss Laura Miele out of context (because that’s what journalism is all about, really) saying that the company added co-op to Dead Space 3, because gamers found Dead Space 1 and 2 too scary. Many took this to mean that Dead Space 3 would dispense with the frights, evolving (perhaps devolving?) in to a straight out action game.

“We were doing research coming out of Dead Space 1 and 2 and we’re really proud of those products. We received feedback to understand how we can take the game out to even more consumers,” she said to MCVUK. “We were hearing feedback that they love the thriller game, but it was pretty scary, and the obvious next step was that they wanted to play with someone. So we introduced co-op into the game.”

People seem to have conveniently forgotten what se said next.

“The horror of Dead Space is still all there. It’s still true to its roots and no less scary, but people felt far more comfortable playing it with someone else than they did doing it on their own,” she clarified, adding that “Personally, I would rather go to scary movie with my husband rather than sit at home with the lights out watching one on my own. We’re looking for that to reach out to consumers that perhaps were not open to Dead Space 1 and 2.”

So what she actually said is that the game will be just as scary – but to ease that tension, there’s the option of playing with a friend – so you have somebody to share that pack of adult nappies with – but that the single player, if you’re brave enough, is just as scary as it’s ever been. Everything we’ve seen from the game so far though seems to paint a different picture; Dead Space 3 looks, so far, like a blend of Uncharted and Gears of War and doesn’t seem like it packs much in the way of frights; but I’ll reserve my opinion until y’know…I’ve actually played it.
