Is Epic lying about Unreal Tournament on the 360?

There is something funny going on at Epics headquarters, Mark Rein (who I have always trusted) has come out and said that they haven’t even started working on the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament.

That will happen early next year and the reason for the delay is the fact that the 360 is a closed system which is causing problems for the mods… not sure why but I guess that is why I don’t work for Epic 😉

Anyway that is all good and well BUT I did report the other day about how great the game looked on the 360. That story was based on a reputable website in Australia (yes they exist) called Gameplayer which had a 6, yes 6, page review on how well the game plays on the Xbox 360.

Apparently they were invited to an event at Epic’s North Carolina offices where they were given the chance to play UTIII on the 360….

So why would they lie about it, or why would Mark Rein lie about it?

Something is not right here….

Since Epic pocketed the cash from 360 owners for Gears they have done a complete about turn and kicked us in the teeth at every opportunity. I’ve been reading a very subtle PS 3 bias from Epic HQ since the Gears hype started fading. A couple of months ago the 360 was easily accessible and the PS 3 difficult to work with – now its the other way round?

Money can do nasty things with developers. I smell a Sony rat with $$$ somewhere in the mix. Regardless of which, Epic can go stuff themselves if they cock up the UT3 X360 version.

I think this is going to go on until the PS3 UT3 is released and the Xbox360 gets nearer, then I expect a complete turn around in this guys statements.

I personally think the delays for the X360 are strategic rather than technical. There are so many upcoming and existing FPS (Halo 3 , Bioshock , Orange Box , COD 4 etc.) available for the console that Epic may have decided to release UT3 at a time when competition for the gamers hard earned green is not so intense. Epic is well aware that the X360 will be the platform on which they will generate the bulk of their sales , and they are just engaging in a bit of smoke and mirrors marketing BS to encourage the PS3 fans to rush out and buy a copy over the holidays.

My xbox died and I am patiently waiting for MI Digital to send me a new one. On the upside I should probably be thankful that my launch edition Pro getting traded for a shiny new one with hdmi and hopefully more reliable zephyr chipset

Waiting for MI Digital to send you one, is like waiting for your death to come. It comes sooner or later, but it is still a helluva long wait.

Agreed with all above. Mark Rein is Epics party hostess, he suck up to whoevers going to be paying for the next round. There is no way he’s going to wizzle all over the users that just bought 3 million copies of Gears, considering he wants to sell them UTIII and GoW2.

    We’re talking how many UT3’s on PS3? 500 000? Compared to 7 000 000+ units in total on the 360?

Boo hoo dear acne faced XBots of the world. Expect more of this as more and more devs find out that XBox is easy, but ease comes at a price called performance. I would expect to see more and more devs starting to support the PS3.

Some new news on this from MR Rein :

    http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=87771

Mark Rein has said Unreal Tournament 3 already works on Xbox 360, and it did as far back as last spring.

What he meant to say yesterday was that his team will “start working on it again” after Christmas, not begin from scratch, silly.

“What I probably should have said was ‘start working on it again’. We had the game up and running on all three platforms up until last spring,” Rein clarified to games blog Joystiq.

“We stopped working on the 360 version so we could concentrate our efforts on shipping the various PC and PS3 versions.”

The PC version is out on 23rd November and we are all very excited, but there is increased concern over whether the PS3 offering will be out this year – it was announced as a console exclusive until the end of 2007 back at E3.

Rein and Epic Games offer only that it “will be done when it is done”, and are working as hard as they can to make it so – even if they are taking Christmas off how dare they etc.

Once back and a few belt-sizes bigger they will get back to work on the 360 version, which will hopefully prove a cinch, given that Epic already made something or other for it that did quite well.

“Once we get [the PC and PS3 versions] out of the way, and take some time to enjoy the holidays with our friends and families, we’ll start working on the 360 version again,” Rein continued, hinting that PS3 owners will get it in their stockings after all.

“There’s still a decent bit of work to do. For example we have simple LAN play but no Xbox Live implementation yet and we need to work with Microsoft to figure out how to accommodate mods on their platform.”

Last spring? So in other words the PS3 version required a LOT of manpower to be pulled off? Interesting.
