Is Sony paying CNBC to make the PS3 look good?

Jane Wells, a writer for CNBC in section called “Funny Business” has posted an article titled “The Ultimate Proof Sony is Winning”.

Now, I am going to get straight to the point. I think this article is an absolute load of hogwash. Basically, the author tells a story of how her incredibly informed 16 year old son decided to sell his Xbox 360 and buy a PS3 instead after watching the E3 Press Conference from Sony.

So why do I think that it’s a steaming pile of horse droppings? Find out after the jump.

Ok, so Jane Wells starts her article off by saying:

“Forget the analysts. Forget the NPD sales figures. Forget the CEO’s. I live with the ultimate expert on the video game industry—my 16-year-old son.

He not only plays video games, he watches every show about them on G4, he participates in chat rooms about them on the internet, he competes in a variety of games on a variety of platforms. He always tells me the latest trend three months before I read about it in the media.”

She then goes on with a story of how her son (who has never been a playstation fan) was so blown away by the E3 Sony Press Conference and seeing exclusive titles such as MGS4 and others that he packed up his Xbox 360, all of it’s games and accessories and headed straight over to a Game Stop store to go and trade it all in for a PS3. She talks of how all the staff at Game Stop were singing the PS3’s praises as well as some story about them selling him a second hand copy of MGS4 because Blu Ray’s are so awesome that they don’t get scratched, she does however refer to them as Fanboys.

She ends it off by saying that “One thing we do know. We may not be able to stream Netflix movies onto the console (yet) but now we can start ordering them on Blu-ray.As we left the store, I said to him, “I never thought I’d see you with a PlayStation.” “Neither did I,” he replied. “

What’s up with that “(yet)” on the Netflix bit anyway, does she know something we don’t?

How in the heck is it that her son, which is apparently really clued up on gaming news and the state of the industry, only properly heard of MGS4 at E3, seriously? It all seems really odd and it feels to me as if its a baseless article that does nothing more than make the PS3 look like the better option.

It all seems strange to me that a website like cnbc.com would put out an article like this that basically says “The PS3 is great now, you should get one because my son says its better than the Xbox 360”. It really starts to make me wonder if Sony hasn’t slipped some cash over to CNBC to make them look good, either that or this woman is some sort of raging fanboy(girl?).

Scream “Fanboy” at me if you want but you know that an article like this doesn’t make any sense coming out of CNBC, it wouldn’t no matter which console she spoke about.

… I’m going to stick my neck out here and say this woman is an /r/-tard, apparently the majority of these people think the same: http://www.cnbc.com/id/25787117, i bet she’s bringing hits to the site though (this way she get’s to keep her job) maybe she should just get her son to write her articles and do reviews on all the latest and greatest games that came out months ago?

Nick what do you expect of a console with reliability issues, doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out people get tired swopping consoles that have a lifetime of 3 months

Just on quality the ps3 is a better buy alone

It sounds about right to me. 😐
Sony were all about the gaming at E3, while MS were playing catchup on the media hub side of things. Of course suddenly that means MS won! /flamesuit off/

MS concentrates on the whole experience hence the name 360, rather than show casing the same game for the past 3 years and making promises of what can be. MS have plenty 3rd party game developers to back them up. There were plenty of upcoming titles unveiled during E3 by 3rd party developers 😛

You don’t have to won the game studio to make good games

Her son cannot be real gamer.

    Real gamers have: a 360, a DS, a Wii, a PS3, a PS2, a PSP, a gaming PC.

He seems like a fad boy.

Strange, I’ve never got an RROD and my console is more than a year old. The RROD is dissapearing, it’s the PS3 fanboys thats still desperately clinging onto it.

Catchup on who? Definitely not Sony since they are way behind in this department.

I would call the FF anouncement pretty big in the games department.

So as soon as an article comes out in favour of ps3 its dismissed as lunacy, if the ps3 was replaced by an xbox no one would say a thing on this site

    Video Marketplace.

It’s Sony playing catchup to MS not the other way around. Microsoft are moving ahead – streaming, interactive TV, Sony are still catching up.

Yes PS3 has BD, but that’s a market unto itself, they can both deliver HD content but differently, MS is the better “connected” device.

As for the rest of the article, I’ll also call bollocks, or just ‘tard. MGS4 wasn’t even featured at E3, and if this is the first he’s heard of it he’s a pleb of note (and obviously didn’t see the GoW2 presentation 😉 )

*sigh* i’m getting tired of comments like this. Its getting old. Of course it would be the same if this article was about the 360 or the Wii.

“an article like this doesn’t make any sense coming out of CNBC, it wouldn’t no matter which console she spoke about.”

Im sure that when we posted the articles about PS3 nailing the 360 you barely took notice. Just because you choose to ignore all the good news about ps3 and the bad news about xbox 360 makes me wonder if you arent just making comments like this to make yourself feel better, for whatever reason. I dont understand your intentions, give it up already.

The netflix thing is cool. But I think that announcement was MS playing catch-up with Sony. I think that was the original argument. The PS3 has BD and BD Live interactivity. Different market yes, but it still falls under “other than gaming” media. MS needed something to compete with that. Hence the Netflix thing which might in future turn out to be a more profitable approach than optical. I suppose nothing is stopping Sony from starting their own streaming service with media partners.

Well, the Xbox360 can play custom music streamed from your PC while playing games. IMO thats a pretty nice feature to have media wise since I love playing some music while messing around with pac-man or geometry wars.

Can the PS3 do something the Xbox360 can’t media wise excluding Blu-Ray?

With the publicity she’s handing Sony she could have got one for nothing.

Netflix is not the first time videos have featured on the 360, MS have had the video marketplace forever, where there have been tons of movies to download in sd and hd, netflix is justa current expansion of that. It would be interesting to see the number of movies downloaded of live over the last year vs, the number of BD discs sold.
