January’s NPD’s are predictably dull

The NPD results are, if we’re being frank, pretty damned boring. Every month, the software sales become less and less relevant thanks to the increasing prevalence of digital sales. The hardware sales are pretty damned uninteresting too, because it’s inevitably some twaddle about the PlayStation 4 being the best-selling console in the US, because of course it is.

January’s NPD results though, are an absolute snorefest. They’re unbearably predictable – and with no major video game releases in January, pretty damned uninteresting. To sum it all up though, the PS4 “won,” software sales are down, hardware sales are down, and retails sales in general are down.

“Recently, hardware declines typically were a result of [Xbox 360 and PS3] generation console and portable declines exceeding growth in [the current] generation hardware sales,” NPD analyst Liam Callahan said.

“In January 2016, however, the sales of [current] generation consoles declined by 8 percent, despite relatively flat unit sales, as average prices dipped by 6 percent as a result of price cuts that took place between January 2015 and January 2016.”

That should change this month, with the introduction of a number of exciting games being released in this second month of the year.

The software charts for January? Dull. Here’re the top ten retail games in the US for January.

  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops III (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3, PC)
  2. Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
  3. NBA 2K16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
  4. Star Wars: Battlefront (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
  5. Fallout 4 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
  6. Minecraft (360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3)
  7. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
  8. Madden NFL 16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
  9. Lego: Marvel Avengers (PS4, Xbox One, 360, Wii U, PS3, 3DS, Vita)
  10. FIFA 16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)

The only new game in the list is LEGO Marvel Avengers – notable here because for the first time, it’s sold most copies on the new consoles instead of the older ones.

“New physical software declined by 10 percent in January 2016 versus last January,” said Callahan. “Part of this decline stemmed from a dearth of new launches this month compared to last year with new launches generating 51 percent fewer dollar sales than January 2014 launches.”

I think Rockstar believes that their games will never age and therefor never needs to be marked down.
Then again, if they believe Social Club on pc is a good, they will probably believe anything.

I paid less than that for a retail copy.

But I think that’s null and void seeing as I’ve bought the game twice…
